Please read and discuss: http://www.managingcommunities.com/2008/02/01/administrators-and-moderators-have-to-be-online-daredevils/

Quote:
When you are in a position where you must moderate a community (whether as an administrator or a moderator), you really have to be a bit of an online daredevil in that you can’t “play it safe” with links, content, etc. You have to actually see the bad stuff so that you can remove it.

Thanks,

Patrick

I have to disagree with you in this part:
Quote:

You can’t say “well, that looks like porn spam” or “I think this link is suspicious, better not click it!” You actually have to be the one to look at it and click it so that you can make a proper decision as to its appropriateness on your community or safety to your members.

I've never had that reaction. My personal experience with the matter is that anyone can tell just by the URL if the link leads to an unsavory web site.

Now, I can imagine a newbie to forums or to the web in general not knowing, but if you're running your own forum, you're probably not a newbie and can tell where a link is going to take you before clicking it.

Making assumptions could lead to an innocent member being punished. Some links are carefully named, and it may not be what you expect. No matter how many years of service as a staff member, there will always be bumps. Nobody can be perfect while checking these links. Yes, some are easier than others, but I don't think you can just see a list and point the good from the bad. Smile

Thanks for the replies. Smile Good stuff.

Yeah, you can definitely pick them out sometimes. It a site's URL is xxxpornvideos.---, then yeah, you could pull that on the link text alone. But, like Ryan said, often times, they are more carefully named. Like, let's say something was camvids.--- ... that could be bad or... it might not be. Webcams don't have to be porn.

I'm talking about more than porn, though. Outside of cases like that, you can't necessarily know if a link is infested with something unless you actually check it out. Maybe a couple times I've had a member tell me that a link had spyware on it and, from the link itself, you wouldn't be able to just tell. So, I had to visit it myself to get an official yay or nay, since I can't just go on what the member said.

Thanks,

Patrick

One day I found a link on my site about "how to prepare hot dogs". First I thought of fast food but decided to check it out and it turned out as a site about animal porn! :puke:

Leaving such a link online could bring me in serious legal trouble. I just wonder what would happen if I ever clicked a camouflaged child porn link.

Porn (and other illegal sujects such as drugs, computer hacking, and promoting terrorist activities) , especially porn that is illegal in your area, has to dealt with. In the US, if somebody put kiddie porn or animal porn, you can not outright delete it and leave it at that. It has to be reported, with copies of logs, links and any attached files sent to the authorities. In terms of logs, it is not just the forum access/posting logs, but also server logs.

Only then, when the authorities tell you to delete it, can you so do it. Until then, it is considered as evidence. It would be best to burn cd/dvd's of these (if necessary- the whole site) and give it to them. The other alternative is for them to go to your server and pull the hard drive(s) out.
