For those that use AdSense, how much do you use channels to track performance?

Because of the AdSense code that we use, we are a little limited by my technical knowledge as to tracking, but we do track each ad code individually. That said, I don't watch it that closely. I will use it when I make adjustments in the future, though.

I have a couple of channels set up, but I don't really use them to track stuff that much.

i have about 200 channels running so i hope they lift the limit as i think there is a cap of 200. i used the url channels and also the normal channels together. these days u can apply several channels to one ad though i have not really made the most of this. for example you can have a "small rectangle" channel and also a "forum header" channel both attached to the one ad block. that helps you to test different ad blocks to see which ones work best in certain spots. though i have been a little lazy in this regard. i need to pay greater attention to this.

in general my adsense earnings have been falling so i am feeling a bit disenchanted. my traffic is still ok but clicks are down and also eCPM is down too.

cheers, Smile

I've always used channels heavily. For example, on Site A I run 2 google ad units and I use a different channel for each size. There is no way to properly test without being able to track the results. Now that we run a blog network we can only use 1 channel per site because we have so many. We will be at 200 in the next month or two and I need 3-4 channels per site! Hopefully we'll be big enough soon to ask Google to give that to us Wink

Channels are the best tool available to you for understanding how well your ads are performing.

I intend to redo all the channels on my sites now that multiple channels are available. I intend to use the following for every ad:

URL
dimension
placement
text/image/both
color scheme

Can anyone think of additional considerations?

i guess additional considerations might include (i) whether you have ad blocks alongside other ad blocks or (ii) the number of ads you have on a given page....but then it getting a bit complicated isn't it! Smile

Yeah, I wish we could do more specific ad tracking, but we can't. Still, what we have is useful. I just made some changes recently and the statistical data was a large part of it. Smile

It would be nice if they just gave you an id that you could append to the format instead of manually creating the tags, that would make my life so much easier, lol.

I don't think that is beyond complicated at all. The pages on most sites are being built dynamically and since AdSense channels are easily added once in google then applied in code across multiple pages i think this is a good idea! thanks!
