I used to like cPanel, but my host uses DirectAdmin. It's cheaper and WAY better, if you ask me. I have a dedicated server and use DirectAdmin on it. We've moved sites a couple of times and it has a very, very cool backup / restore. I also like that you can have 1 ftp account for all your domains if you want, something cPanel didn't have. You should check it out. It doesn't look as polished as cPanel, but its more polished! _________________ Chrispian H. Burks

Directadmin is looking pretty nice so far, ill look at it in more depth and see if it is the answer for a control panel ^_^
I do personally like cpanel alot, but the price tag is huge and is totally out of my price range o_O
thanks everyone for the help so far,

i host my own sites aswell as email.
to be honnest the server isnt that big....from memory its a p4 2.8gb with a gig of ram and 200gig hdd
i use apache and php on a MS2003 server software package.
mdaemon for email
but even though there isnt much special about the server itself. We have a uncapped internet connection. For me that makes all of the difference in the speed of the site. We pay $109.95au per month for our connection which allows us 15gb downloads and unlimited up. With speeds that supposively

| Broadband Internet we will get you surfing the Internet with speeds of up to 30Mbps download and up to 2Mbps upload |
but you can see that
http://www.not.com.au
in my opinion is quite fast.
We where under the impression that we were going to have a quick interent anyway.
hope that you can get some info out of that |

I decided to move to a dedicate privately owned server after our last hosting service trashed our data.
I have the server at home and bought a 2nd ADSL connection specifically for the servers use.
Although the speed of the site has decreased (as you would expect from going from a core pipe to a home pipe); it is very much usable and I've had no complaints.
I now also have FULL control over it, and have a DDS4 backup unit to store the data.
Moving to my own server was the best move I've ever made I think regarding my flagship site....
No more storage restricts; no more data capacity restrictions
and all in all....no Bandwidth restrictions.
And all financed by donations from my site.
With over 3000 active accounts and 200+ users visiting each day - i'm a happy bunny
