Ive got a few questions about expenses and such, but before asking, I just want to make sure someone would reply >_<
Some deal with hardware, others with software, expenses, etc.

I actually was going to host my site on my own server, but I got a deal to get all the space I need for free by just designing a website for psychiatrist. In the process of setting things up (before I went with payed space), I found this helpful site: DSLWebserver.com.
I think it will answer most of your questions and give you many great tips and resources. Also, if you e-mail the webmaster with any questions, he responds quickly. _________________ [The Smash Syndicate] Ek Pyros - Out of Fire |

Thanks ^_^ My major problem is that Im not in direct control of the resource mamangement on my current setup. So many other people hog all the resources that it just makes it a pain to operate sometimes. Having my own server would solve that problem.
Thanks for the link,

No problem. Do you have your own separate machine that you can setup as a webserver apart from your normal cpu? _________________ [The Smash Syndicate] Ek Pyros - Out of Fire |

Yay ^_^
1. What parts are a priority for top speed on server hardware? I know ram and processor are important, but is there anything else and which should take priority?
2. Ive heard of some sites being hosted off of home connections instead of at another center. What kind of connection is needed to do that, and how much traffic could a home connection possibly support?
3. If you do not use a home connection, do you have any suggestions where to locate my server?
Ill probably have more questions later, but since its 9 am and im still groggy, this is all i could come up with for now ^_^
Thanks for helping out,

The biggies are processor speed, RAM, HD access speed (SCSI HD are more expensive, but are far superior in a server environment) and CPU L2 cache size.
My server is located at our host and is not a home server. You'd need a pretty fat pipe to host at home and that runs into some serious money. A T1 connection, for example, would cost me $1600/month _________________ The Conversation Pit

Came up with another question >_<
What do you do for a control panel solution? As far as I know, the major ones (cpanel and plesk) have very expensive licences.

cpanel have a lifetime licence so if you intend selling hosting packages, it is worth the outlay to get it installed. _________________ ~HG~

Well i likely wont be selling anything and im not particularly interested in trying to make money or generate revenue on my site. Thus a cheaper option than cpanel is optimal.
