As my members are avatars fanatics I recently installed the Random Avatars Mod
MOD Author: Mosheen

MOD Description: This MOD will allow your users to upload multiple avatars, which will cycle randomly when displaying a topic. A random avatar from the poster's profile is chosen for each post.

MOD Version: 1.0.15

Available from: http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/5348

I don't like how the poster information panel in topics can be stretched if the avatars are too big, so I either leave it around 65x65 to 75x75. In my eyes avatars are not so important that 100 pixels are needed. However, I can't really base it off from me, I need to base it off from my members. Because I've been looking around some posts from admins here, and it seems their members really like avatars. Laughing

My size may change from the future. I don't allow uploading for I heard that if you have a large forum, uploading can suck bandwidth fast.

Ooh. That will give me a lot more options at your forum because I have a lot of LJ icons I like stored in my hdd.

At my forum the maximum dimensions are 100x100. I consider it the perfect length.

150x150 currently. I reduced amounts of post per page view so that it will be less of a load to view. I allow gallery AND uploads, but I plan to probably disallow uploads. I was considering going with a secret gallery and a unique avatar hack for it.

The length is not that important really.

It is the width that is important as the wider the avatar then the wider the profile table when you view the topic and that makes the posting area smaller in width.

I personally go for 120 x 120 as the maximum as at least that gives graphic makers the opportunity to add as much as possible to their avatars and still make them readable/viewable.

Excluding even some phpBB forums (depending on the template, or if one made his own editing) that have the user info lined on top, like some vb boards.

120x120 is also fine to me. It's the max I'd go, but I'm sticking with 100x100. If I had the user info lined on top, I would be more willing to consider going to 120.

I usually go with 100x100 also, though sometimes I might make it a little smaller. I only allow remote linking and a handful of gallery avatars at the moment. Not many people use avatars at my boards, though, so I haven't given it too much thought.
