Nice forum you have here. I currently use Jconserv's free forum hosting for my board. However the only thing I don't like is I can't add my own banner ads to the board. Does anyone know any hosts that let you do this that has all the featues jconserv does?
Thanks |

I can't recommend anything, but I can tell you stay clear of phpBBforfree. You have no control except for your ACP.
They have the dumbest MOD's installed, and way too huge banners, and they don't have a ton of uptime, like other hosts.
There is something called myfreebb or something, they looked pretty good. Google it, I'm sure you'll see it. _________________ Truestar

Haha, another of these posts.
Really though, before everyone starts to toot their own horn look for the following in a service before choosing it:
1. Freedom to do your own work - This is big on your list since thats what youre not liking about your current host
2. Proper resources - Yes we all love those sites that claim to give huge numbers of resources, but place huge restrictions on them or shut their doors 2 months later.
3. Proper access - Try and look for a host with at least ftp and phpmyadmin access, if not better. Having loads of resources doent help if you need to ask the webhost before you do anything.
4. Read their procedures - Read the places Terms of service and make sure they dont forbid what youre wanting to do and see if youd be a good fit for them.
5. Get a sense of the overall community - Is the community friendly?, Helpful? Honest? Are they quick to provide their services or sluggish? Will you need personalized attention?
6. Stability - Make sure that not only the host, but that the people that run the service are stable. Nothing like having one of the people of the service go off the deep end and decide to arbitraily delete accounts because theyre upset.
7. Experience - Make sure the people providing the service are experienced and know what theyre are doing and talking about. Theres nothing good going to come of someone that offers a service but has no idea how to run it or handle situations that will come up.
Those are my 7 things to look for. None are really in any particular order of importance. Tooting my own horn would kind of defeat the purpose of this post so ill refrain from doing that ^_^

yes myfreebb.com are quite good. i used them for a while but the ads seemed to creep up to being more and more on my forum. so now i host my own and others free instead. it really is worth spending that little bit to get FULL control.
another i found to be quite good was one which hosted both ipb and phpbb forums for free but can't remember the site. will let you know if i remember. _________________ Great value web design templates at:

The best free host is your own.
I say, find yourself a host wiht ftp and mySQL, then download a copy of phpbb, and install it on there.
Byethost.com is an ok free hosting that allows ftp and mySQl, and it also giv eyou different plans.
But if you want a good free hosting, lifelesspeople.com is a nice place. It gives you free hosting, bu tyou gotta post a certain number per month. _________________ Administrator of Ultimate Gaming

if you are serious about your board, then you need to pay the little bit it costs for a host and a domain name.
you can get a good hosting account and a domain name for under $50 a year.
so why put up with all the crap you have to with free hosts.

I certainly recommend hosting it yourself for reasons such as installing mods, adding extra styles to give it a unique look, access to the database and keeping backups yourself.
There are many free hosts suitable for forum hosting as well such as Zymic if you aren't prepared to pay. |
