One of the hardest decisions to make is to include a chatroom and if so how to incorporate it into phpBB.

Sure we have the chat box mod by smartor which is (unless updated lately) not really an alternative for the serious users of chat.

I have also used an IRC chatroom which was fine for awhile until problems started with the IRC clients servers and in the end I removed it.

I am currently using the free version of SigmaChat which works fine but other than a few minor skin details, I am unable to mod it to include my own banner in place af the SigmaChat banner. I could however buy the pro version and do just that but feel the licence for it is rather over priced so have not gone that way with it.

Also, I cannot link the chatroom users online, to the forum index to show how many users are in chat and this tends to shy people away from chat altogether.

Does anyone use a chatroom on their forum and if so, what do you use and does the number of users show as online on the forum index ???

Yes. Not a chatroom per se, but I use the Javascript Chatbox 3.0.2 by Black Dragon Syndicate. It's a popup with a link for the index page. It also has an entry at the bottom in the logged in users area, showing who is currently in chat.

Sadly, it doesn't get very much use Sad

It works great. Very stable. Here's the link:

I've got an older version than this link. I guess it's the one called "Smartor's".

I use a chat room on one of my sites (or will when it is launched). It can be used as a stand-alone script or as a hack integrated into phpBB. It costs $5, but I am really happy with how it works, all source code is included, it's built using PHP and Flash, and if you don't have a high speed connection it can take a while to load.

I've been using PCPIN's chat for a long time. It rarely gets any use.

The best way to get any chatroom to work is to have a list on the pages that show who is in chat. Then when people see people in chat, then they come in. So whatever prog you decide on, find one you can integrate that feature into your forum index page or overall_header.

There's another free one out there. http://www.freejavachat.com/ If I remember right, you can pretty much skin it the way you want. You can access your chatroom that you set up on your site/domain by either a link to the java chat from your site or a link to the mIRC channel.

Here's how my chatbox shows who is in chat:

I thought about not following up on this as there are so many free ones out there, but since I too use flashChat (for better than a year now) I can't see myself using anything else. Bottom line is flashChat for five bones is like exchanging a penny for a $100 bill.

It's a fantastic piece of work.

Personally, I don't mind spending a few bucks for MODs/other software to improve on my site (for one, I can't see not having Martin's DLMan Pro on any site I put up).

I don't want to turn this into a promo for flashChat, but I highly suggest you sneak a peek at their site under the link provided and test their demo as well as features list.

I use IRC because one of my mod's is a server owner. It's nice not to have to worry about IRCops on servers such as espernet. Thus far we haven't had any issues. And of course I love mIRC scripts (/xyzzy is my favorite).
