Months ago, there was a member on one of my sites who posted about a topic that… well, let’s say that most people who read it probably thought that he was either out of his mind or a total liar. And yet, it was something where you couldn’t be 100% sure. And, in reading his posts, he wasn’t really violating our guidelines. He’s not being rude, disrespectful, condescending… he doesn’t appear to be purposely misleading people (that we can readily see, though it wouldn’t be totally unfair to guess it) and, really, the post appears to be fine.

As I stated at the blog, this just proves that's there is more to moderation than the mechanics of dealing with posts. A moderator has to be able to balance the board out, and make sure things stay equal. Moderators have to determine what kinds of response violate the Code of Conduct they enforce, and this can sometimes be a tricky job as I've found out over the past year or so.

However, if you don't know, ask a moderator whose been on staff longer, or the administrator. Smile

Sometimes members don't intend to come across as they do. This can usually happen with a lack of smilies in their posts, or a poor choice of words. After one starts moderating for a long time, they get the feel for this and can determine what the post meant. However that doesn't mean the post should stay in public view. Some websites offer the chance to get a quote, and repost it in a friendlier manner.

Then again, some posts are just blatant disregard for the forum rules as in the article at MC. Smile

I started learning how to manage communities about 6 years ago. At that time I had a forum about a certain religion for women only. In the end I lost my very last nerve and shut it down. People kept on bullying, insulting each other as idolators and such. The perfect I'm holier than thou syndrom.

After 6 months I had to use the iron broom and enforce my TOS by sheer banning violence. The end result: I was threatened with murder, my phone rang 160 times in 24 hours. Today I run a fun forum only! Very Happy

lol, that's terrible. But, it can come with the job. Smile I don't think I'd ever give out my home phone on any of my websites. Wink

The problem is by I law I'm forced to publish a full imprint including address and phone number! Another forum owner who refused had to pay a 15000 € fine! Sad

Yeah, it's the same with domain name whois information. (You can lose your domain name if you give false info). For this reason, I've purchased a P.O. Box and a Skype number. Both of them reach me, but neither is my home address or number. I don't know if you could do something like that.

No way here... this is Germany and we insist on the right to make everything as complicated as possible! A post box may work but the phone number must be land line.

That's too bad. Sad Well, at least you can get a post box, maybe, so they don't have your home address. I'm a little surprised by the land line requirement. I guess that rules out cell phones, too?

I was just thinking the same thing- cellphone.
You can get one with a minimal service or prepaid plan, and have it as the land line that you register the site with. Keeping it separate will keep fools and jokers from calling your real home line.

We don't have a clear online law here and that is the problem! Depending on where you live the judges may come to toally different demands.

For example a user reports a questionable post at Sunday 3 AM, you have to delete this within a reasonable time. But what is a reasonable time? 1 hour or next workday?

Or a user posts a link to a site with links to pornsites. As an admin you have to check out every link! But if you land on a child porn site you are in dire need of a lawyer because of the trouble...

One thing is clear: if I ever make a living of my websites I'll leave Germany! Safety first...
