My brother's forum went through a rare (?) case where a long lasting member started to edit all his posts and replace them with "[removed]" or something. This resulted in quite a bit of damage...

This has now got me thinking. My forum software SMF gives me the power to disable users from editing their posts after X minutes.

Should I do this?? Mine is a small community and I don't see such a problem occuring anytime soon, but I'm pretty certain that when it does I will not be able to predict it at all... It happened to my brother and no one could have predicted it.

So again, should I disable editing of posts by users after X minutes? And what should X be? I'm thinking of X = 2880 minutes or about 2 days, after which they cannot edit their own posts.

What do you guys suggest...

Oh, I could always restore posts (when "it" happens) using a backup but I'm not in a position to backup my forum everyday. Sometimes I backup only after about 4 to 5 days.

You could always give them a reasonable amount of time to edit their post and then disable it. A few hours at most should cover most "oops" I need to edit that kind of posts.

If it's causing damage to discussion then definitely put it into place. I always look over my posts if I din't preview it, so generally I only need few minutes. But then I may say something, then rethink it, and edit it the next day. So yeah, I would set the time period to about 1-2 days. Smile

Yeah, I don't see why not. Chances are that if that sort of thing matters, the posts will be months old, but sometimes I imagine it could be otherwise. You could give it a week and I'd expect it to be fine. But, like Chris said, a couple hours is fine.

No such hack/modification exists for phpBB that I am aware of. I used the hack to stop a member from editing their post once it had been replied to. Personally I don't mind double posting anyway. The hack doesn't stop moderators from editing their post on any forum but then again I trust them so no biggy. I think it works well. It's definitely something that needs to be protected against.

Well the last time I checked in phpBB the edit button is just hidden, if the user manually typed in the URL to edit he is simply allowed to....

Anyway, precious SMF allows me to do this perfectly, and I even hacked it to make no restriction to certain members (who need to keep editing a post).

Thanks for your responses all... appreciated.

I'm currently thinking of giving something like 12 hours ... I just want to cut out the possibility of an well-established poster getting ticked off and deleting all his posts (editing), this way he can only damage his posts within the last 12 hours and other genuine users can still have the liberty of 12 hours Smile

Teknomancer been there too ..

This is why on my main Martial Arts forum (the Romanian one) they can edit a message till 15 minutes pass from the initial post. I don't want to have to go through this again (having to salvage what I could from hundreds of posts)

I absolutely hate that. As you probably read in another topic I responded to, one of my members has done that, as well. Disallowing editing after a certain amount of time is a great bet. However, I don't have that. I can remove editing from certain members, though.

I don't allow editing in The Debating Table and Headlines because, though it may happen anyway, those forums are where the most heated exchanges take place, and one is much more likely to come back later and edit his posts there. I care about the reviewability of the topics at my forum, so such action would infuriate me, and I strive to protect my content.

I'm thinking about adding that edit time limit MOD. . .

I'll be happy to use this feature in phpBB3, that's for sure. Probaby set it to a few hours, as, like Chrispian said, this should cover most people that aren't just trying to abuse the editing privileges.
