I have a number of *contests* running on Galahs Corner on a permanent basis which are as follows:

Member of the Week The member must be active during the week prior to the Sunday when it is announced.

Mystery Post Points are awarded to the a member who posts closest to the pre-determined time and is announced on Sundays. (I would like to see a mod made for this one if anyone is interested)

Powerball Members have an opportunity of winning points by selecting the winning powerball number from the Powerball Lotto run in Australia. If there is no winner the prize pool which starts at 500 points jackpots by 100 points each week until won.

Random Points Spirit Galah visits the site from time to time and awards members who are active at the time with random points.

Short Story and Poetry comps We run short story and poetry comps from time to time where points are awarded.

Caption Competition Another one where members can win points for writing a winning caption to a picture that is displayed.

All these are in addition to the site lottery which is drawn daily using zaraths lottery mod. (Does anyone know how to set that mod so it is drawn at 24 hours intervals instead of all over the place as it is atm?)

All points are converted to cash payouts of $50 which on average takes members around about a year to achieve but it definitely gives them a goal to look forward to and as a result keeps them happily posting away.

A contest has always been in my mind.

But I don't know what do give as prize because I cannot afford to give away money in terms of Dollars. I'm thinking of something else...

But in anycase it will be a contest for:

- Best artwork
- Best comic strip made
- Best animation

or anything along those lines related to my cartoon & comics community....

I've been hoping to start up some quarterly literary contests on my site.
The plan is to give actual prizes.

The problem is - I don't have enough traffic going there to begin with so
I'm not sure it's even worth the effort to try promoting a writing contest so early in the evolution of the site. It's a thought I'll probably revisit after NaNoWriMo - this year...or maybe early next year...

Contests are great if you can utilize them.

I've never ran any contests at my forum.

i have one one contest in the almost two months my forum has been up.

i run a Gamecock sports site and had a referral contest. the user who had the most referrals won a signed 8 x 10 Gamecock baseball photograph.

i plan to have another such contest closer to football season and offer a pair of tickets to a game.
