I pay them with the privledge of being a Moderator. Cool And it's the same case, when I'm the User. Having the privledge is good enough for me, and it makes me work hard to be a good caring member. Smile

Not with cash no.

But I used to live within 30 minutes drive of all of the mod's and admin's and quite often go back to visit, and when I do I take them out for a meal, buy them drinks etc. as a thank you for what they do.
Also, when we went through a period where some Ads made a lot of money about 2 years ago, I took a group of them snowboarding in the alps.

If you make money from the site in any way, I would find it too selfish to bank it all after paying the necessary hosting fees etc. so happily share it with the guys who make the site what it is.

Out of interest, if none of you pay your mod's, what do you do with the money you make, if you don't mind me asking?

(If you display ad's of course, or make profit from your website in another way -donations?).

Any money that I make as profit I keep. This is what I spend all of my time on. It's a full time job... it's more than a full time job, actually. This is what I do. If I had to live right now, I'd be living a very meager existence. But hopefully that'll change as I'll be out on my own soon and eventually I'd like to make a good business out of all of this.

It's a sensitive issue, but if I am not making money from this, I have to stop doing this because it takes far too much of my time up for me not to make a living from it and to eventually do what most of us would want to do - be financially independent. I could run a few sites, but I could simply not do what I do now. This is my business, my full time job, this is what I want to do.

Moderators on my communities are very important to me and they are essential. I love my moderators and I think the world of them. But, paying them is not in the cards. Moderator is a volunteer position at my communities and the person must want to do it, must want to contribute to the community and give back to the community that has given to them. The position is not without some benefit, of course, even without payment. Increased exposure, experience, sometimes worthy of a resume, etc. One of my Support Team members at phpBBHacks.com co-wrote a book on phpBB. A former member of my Support Team is writing the phpBB section of a book that focuses on creating a site with WordPress, Drupal and phpBB. As far as I know, these are the only 2 books in the world that cover phpBB in depth and people from my staff were in on it (paid advance to them, plus royalties), which rocks.

I do not place big time requirements on moderators at my sites. 2 or 3 hours a week minimum, depending on the position. I won't say that I'll never pay moderators, I might. But, when I do, I will expect it to be more of a part time job for that person. Possibly an assistant administrator type role.

Nope don't pay any of my mods and don't expect I ever will. I've always been under the impression that moderation of a forum was more of a volunteer service than a full time job. But hey...if anyone knows someone who is paying people to moderate sign me up for that job Smile

Paying moderators on internet message boards is unheard of unless it's some corporate/commercial website run by the in-house staff of the company/organization.

Either people voluntarily do it (and do it gladly) or you find somebody else. Simple as that. On most forums, people consider it an honour to be chosen as a moderator and wouldn't even dream of thinking that it's a paying job.

No, I don't pay either. If (or when) my forum starts making decent money, then I would consider sharing the wealth Very Happy
