subSilver is wildly popular and supported my mods. I think it's because it is so easy on the eyes.

I've been on some heavily customized sites where the admin unwisely has a color scheme like yellow text on a dark purple background, or some such nonsense. Most adults don't see any appeal on a "gee whiz" color explosion template. They just want to read and post Wink

Remember "KISS"?

OK, since I started my forums just a few days back. I'll begin by saying that any forum I start or will start in the future will never ever have the default theme of the software be it, subSilver for phpBB or default/classic for SMF or the purple one for vBulletin.

I've added PinkVibes (for the ladies), subTrails (very nice) and Actionpoint to my forum, in addition to subSilver. It seems to satisfy everyone now, although the vast majority still use subSilver.

I have changed my icgstation theme for the second time. Now I bet no one can recognize the initial look Very Happy

I start from defaults and then go crazy. I always modify ... everything ...

3 is the magic number - one dark, one so-so, the other light.

I usually pick a handful of themes then change them around. Colors, graphics, maybe layout, etc. I don't modify them to the point where you can't tell what the original theme was. Why? I don't have the time, and the time I do have is dedicated to maintenance and code changes.

I will sign up for a forum that still uses subSilver if the content of the forum is good. I'm not that elitist. Razz But I do appreciate nice, new themes just as much as anyone else.

While i love other themes, i leave subsilver in as a selection for users and dont modify it. Why? Because some people are so attached to that theme, that if they had to use anything else, they would get totally lost (this is especially true in the case of those people that dont visit many forums or have very little experience with coding, etc). While a nice color shift from subsilver is nice sometimes, i have had users that would yell at me for messing with subsilver at all (yes some people are THAT attached). Others have moved on from the subsilver dependancy, but theres alot out there that wouldnt change a thing about subsilver because they refuse to move on >_<

Laughing I hate subSilver and it draws me to conclude either they are crazy, or I am. (Joking Razz )

subSilver has it's exceptions, I've seen others but the first one that comes to mind is obviously CommunityAdmins.com. Patrick modified this theme and it looks great, it obliterates the dull appearance and mood of the original theme. Yes, I do like subSilver in some cases. Smile

I just love seeing the ones that not only have the default theme, but don't even bother replacing the logo.
