I played with the layout on a new forum I was trying, and didn't like the look. It "squished" the remainder of the forum into an area where it really didn't look right, so I ditched it.

i think it works well but is only profitable if you members actually use the links so you can't judge the program based on others checks..

For those of you considering putting ads on the left side of the screen:

If you want your forums to be printer friendly, please dont put ads on the left side of the screen. Either that or put in a printer-friendly mode (theres a mod for this for phpbb)

At my place of employment we get people that complain to us all the time that ads messed up their printouts by cutting off content or the ads were the only thing to print out. Save your users a bit of frustration and do one of the two above methods if you know your forum topics are printed alot.

As for ads during a thread: To me it disrupts the whole discussion. Posts tend to not take more than a few minutes to read and text can only hold in someone's recent memory for a short time (pictures and sounds hold alot longer) so being able to go right down the thread smoothly is more important in text mediums rather than other forms of media.

Threads also are more discussion oreintated than story orientated and asks for alot more input from a reader over someone passively watching tv.

Comparison:

TV: Watch and listen to our story. Watch some ads inbetween.

Thread: Read and think about this topic, sort out what is being said (since threads tend to not run as smoothly as television), oh and by the way look at our ads >_<

People tend to have a hard time doing more than a few things at once and we only have so much simultaneous processing power to go around before things become jumbled.

I dont use ads and im no ad expert, but i know what annoys me and alot of users that frequent communities.

Google is the best way to make money on the forums... period. My site revenue jumped when I started ads on the forums... especially the "in-thread" option.

As Patrick said, though, make sure they blend into the forums. Also, try different formats. AdLinks and such.

Hello! Please could someone explain what "in-thread" option means? How does it work? I'm brand new in forums Idea , so if you could help me it'd be really helpful for me.
Thank you!

Welcome. Smile In thread is when an ad is displayed between posts, usually. Like, you have the first post, then an ad, then the rest of the posts on that page.

Regarding 'in context' ads, such as the ones appearing after the first post, I've opted to put ads here only if the user is a guest of logged off. That way, the majority of people visiting the site will see them, but regular users won't have to put up with them.

Some people also like to use a 'get rid of these ads by registering' as a method to entice new members aboard, and while that may not be necessary for larger boards with good readership and participation, I think it can be a good idea if your board is new. Smile
