Is it always better to run one's website from a domain than a subdomain? I ask this question because I recently received an offer for a free domain (with a good hosting deal) and I'm trying to choose how to use it best. _________________ [The Smash Syndicate] Ek Pyros - Out of Fire

I would use this offer for something new fresh, and what you want. If Shannara is doing well where it is, I would keep it there. I find nothing wrong with your subdomain, "Bobsnox" and "Shannara" go together. The ".bobsnox" just shows the parent site.
I would worry about it. If you have an idea save your offer for that. _________________ Truestar

The Google spot shouldn't be an issue. You can set up a little redirection at the subdomain, pointing people to the domain name. Google also has a page somewhere on their site for updating URLs of a listed site due to site moves like this. _________________ Phantasy Star: The Fringes of Algo | phpBB Smith |

Oh right, I wasn't suggesting that search engine stuff would be an issue - I was trying to say that the site can't get any better in terms of search engine ranking for it's prominent key words, so moving it to a domain wouldn't improve it in that respect. _________________ [The Smash Syndicate] Ek Pyros - Out of Fire |

I think that if you want this community to be something long term, like you have real goals, you want it to grow, you want it to be professional, etc., then yeah, I would definitely go ahead. In other words, it's not just something you mess around with from time to time and you plan to be here for a while, yeah. It's a good time, you are young in your development, still early as far as the forum is concerned activity wise. The bigger you get, the harder it gets to change your link/domain name because you have all of that incoming traffic, search engine related things, etc. attached to that domain.
I am surprised that you posted the domain before registering it. Snap that baby up, now! That is the absolute perfect domain name for forums on the Shannara series. I am a sucker for great domains and especially in getting the very best domain possible. That's the best domain possible. Get it before someone else does. You're lucky that it's still available. If it was me, even if I wanted to use a subdomain (and I don't), I'd buy it, anyway, and redirect it.
That's my recommendation. Have fun. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - CommunityAdmins.com Administrator

I personally just like using mine as a subdomain. Of course my main site links to the forums and etc, but i always felt it was nice to have the forums in their own subdomain.
Originally i did this because i thought it made sense (given my domain name is no indication of being a community) and for security reasons (if someone hacked my forums or snatched my ftp, they could only get as far as the subdomain in most instances).
Now my community is well entrenched and doesnt need the move, so im happy with my decision ^_^
