I see the EasyMOD seems quite nifty, but I've been hiding from it's elite coding. I've heard to easily and successfully have this, you should be a programmer, but thing is, I'm no programmer. Yet I would absolutely LOVE to install all of my desired MOD's all in one week, It would save on a lot of time for me.
Is EasyMOD really that fragile? Do you think people like me should leave it alone, or try it? |

EasyMOD is a great idea, but completely impractical after a certain point. If you add something that does a major code change, like Categories Hierarchy or some other mods from the same author, EasyMOD becomes next to useless because so much was changed. It's better to learn how to install changes manually. _________________ Phantasy Star: The Fringes of Algo | phpBB Smith |

That's the problem I found. Also some MODs aren't compatible with EasyMOD. I used it and it really screwed up my forum code, I ended up having to uninstall a complex MOD by hand. I would rather take the time to do it by hand myself _________________ My Collector Car Forum |

My pet name for it is LazyMOD. This is not a reflection of the work that its authors put into it (as it is masterful coding) but rather that you need to be extremely experienced with phpbb coding before getting full use out of it. Thus only those really experienced with code can use it and handle situations that may occur when something goes wrong. Although its advertised to those not all that skilled with coding, its only really use is to those who are experienced with the coding but are too busy/lazy to do it manually ^_<
Its an excellent timesaver for massive mods (category hierarchy, album category hierarchy, attachment mod) but often i find the time saved to be a short lived benefit as almost invariably something doesnt go exactly right ^_<

Funny. At lest I've gotten enough experience to manually MOD my forum. |

Manually modding is the only way to go IMO as it gives you a real chance to learn and understand the workings of your board.
It also gives you the chance to learn and understand how to write mods and even make minor changes to existing mods as well as your board to suit your own requirements.
Always keep a full backup of your working board in a separate folder which you can quickly and easily overwrite any bad mods/installs with rather than to go back and uninstall the mod. _________________ ~HG~

Yep!! Absolutely ...positively ...correctomundo!!! Can I agree more emphatically with Thoul? _________________ The Conversation Pit

In the initial stages I installed several MODs with EasyMOD and then used a manual installation approach later on. But then, I don't MOD a lot these days. My forum code has attained a stable stage and I don't want to throw a spanner into the works. _________________ Literary Forums

I used to be more tentative about mods too at first. But with a few exceptions (like the Teampage mod and a few others) they don't make it any more unstable if you are very careful when installing them.
At last count I have installed 183 mods on my forum _________________ The Conversation Pit
