Add a box in your navbar template (if you use vbulletin, or near your navigation bar) asking users to sign up. Nothing as extravagant as somethingawful forums have, just a neat little box shown on every page. It will increase signups.

I've used paid advertising twice on the same site. The first time was wildly successful and the second wasn't.

Link in sig is easiest.
Partnering with other popular/active sites is a good one.
I'm sure paid advertising requires the least amount of work beyond link in sig, but I personally can't spend money on advertising.
Mostly, the best member grabber is word of mouth (verbal or via computer) on sites with their own good members. Those members tend to transfer over and continue at a certain level of quality. Getting friends to join is the easiest - you just have to make those acquaintances first.

I think it all depends on how many people are really interested in the topics of your forum, I mean link exchanges can get you a couple of members but the key to a forum growing is the people actually participate... getting participating members doesn't come easy Very Happy

Ok guys i have been taking into consideration what has been being said about how to promote my forum and i have tried to make the content good, have added and arcade, chatroom, and i have submitted the link to Google, yahoo, lycos, to mentoin a few web browsers, and i have also added signature links in very popular web pages i have joined, and have huge numbers of members and still have no traffic, only 8 or 9 users who are never on, i should have the link in my profile to my page as my web page - i am obviously doing something wrong so would appreciate it if someone could take a look and comment on it, ... thanks Bawling

Maybe you just have to have patience and focus on what Teknomancer posted above your last post.

The first thing I can see that needs to be done is to get rid of the subSilver theme of your board and make your board look like it is a Jedi board.

You have to make it interesting to look at as well as to read and participate in.

thanks for that - the only reason i have chosen to stick with subsilver is because i have the chatroom installed on that template, so i guess i'll have to find out how to move it to other templates.
