I'm not sure exactly how to explain this, so I hope it makes sense to someone other than myself. I had a small feeling of elation today when I noticed members posting back and forth in one of the group-based forums at my Shannara site. The post content wasn't anything special, but the fact that members were having relationships and having discussions without me made me feel good. I think the first thought that I could verbalize was, "Wow, the board is finally running itself!" I don't think I've ever been able to say that on any of the forums I run until just today. When members post like that, it feels so good to me because then I can become another member like them - I don't have to (as much) start everything, post new topics, come up with new ideas, etc.

So, when did it first feel like your community was finally running itself?

I've recently had the same feeling. I have only got one forum and have put a lot of work in promoting it. It is a niche forum in one sense and I get a lot of members coming back each day and quite a few posting - even though it's only been running 2 months and only has 180 members. I would be happy to leave it knowing that posts will be made and conversations will take place. The nature of the forum means there will be quite a few spammers so I have to keep an eye on that.

I have the same feeling when I'm gone for a few days, and no PMs, no moderator needs, no imending conflict...and 175 posts. That's the best feeling of logging in and realizing your administrator hat was left on the hook and could stay there, so I can just wade in and discuss with my membership rather than have to moderate it.

Life is good.
