Blogs are so... time consuming. I never really was interested in reading anyone's diary, so I don't bother with them.

Forums aren't a fad - from French salons to Roman fora, there have always been gathering places for chatters to get together and converse. Whether it's face to face or via bbs, I don't think this will change.

Now the whole diary-soapbox thing? Bah. Humbug.

I don't believe blogs are a fad. Really, it's just a term that has been used to talk about something we've been doing forever. Producing content. That'll never be a fad.

I agree, it depends on what kind of blog it is. I use it to write content: opinions, articles, HOWTOs on various subjects, not to maintain a diary kind of thing with boring details about myself.

Blog itself is just a tool, like a forum. How it's used is something that varies from person to person.

I see a lot of Tech newsletter authors are now using blogs as a way of recording what they want to say in an upcoming issue.

I guess it is better than having a word document tucked away on your computer waiting to be updated and not only that, by using a blog, they are now starting to link straight to the info in the newsletters.

Making use of them in that manner means that it looks like they will be around for a long long time to come and that will diffuse any thought that they are just fads.

Of course its another tool, and im not saying its a bad one or not even that it doesnt contain anything useful but I am of the full belief its a fad ^_<

Think about it, the sudden explosion, ease of making/maintenance, what theyre generally used for, most general apperances and lack of effort put in. Just screams fad to me.

Of course the clincher for me is when tv news programs start to refer to them or actually care what they have to say about various topics and treats them like actual sources in a ploy to keep in touch with the in crowd.

[joke]News reporter: Yes, random user joe's blog says this this and this
Viewer: Blogs are awesome! Maybe if i make one and put up something ill get on the news too![/joke]

No offense intended to anyone that has a blog, theres plenty of great ones, just it still seems all out fad to me.

Fads dont last years. Ive been creating Forum Templates for over 5 years, would I be able to do so if this was just a fad? for 5 years? I don't think so.

Your right about developing templates not being a fad Skaidon, it is an addiction which as recently beset me and I should have 4 templates ready to upload to phpBBHacks by next weekend all based on the great Aussie tree, the gum tree Very Happy

Online message boards are a sound medium for communicating and exchanging ideas with others. I think years from now online message board software will look and work radically different, but they will still serve the basic purpose they have since their inception.

I'm not sure what you mean. Could you elaborate on that a bit? Thanks. Smile
