Is foruming a fad (popular trend)? I'm just wondering what my fellow admins think. I myself am only a year and a half or so into forums, so I have little exposure or background to the whole thing.

I wouldn't call it a fad, because fads usually don't last long. Forums in general are certainly popular, though. It seems like they've been around in one form or another for almost as long as the internet itself.

With phpBB being flexible, and free, and a number of free hosts out there it certainly is popular for somone to start a forum. I think it's becoming more than a fad. Of course, phpBB isn't the only software, but it's obviously the first one off the top of my head.

Installing forums and finding space is very easy nowadays. (Well, finding a good host may be more difficult). So why wouldn't you start one?

I think the next question is why start one. Power? Or discussing something you enjoy? But that's off topic. Smile

If you start a forum just for the sake of being an admin and having lots of power etc. etc. then it will get tiring pretty fast.

If you start a forum as a passion for the subject and to build a community of people around it, then you'll find it rewarding. It takes hard work, but it works that way.

It works both ways.

No, it's not a fad. Forums have been around on the internet for a long time and I really think they are one of those things that will stick around for a long time, just because they are/can be so right in this format.

I also think it's not a fad, as the modern-day forum has been around since 1996 (10 years!), and forums started even before then as newsgroups and mailing lists. So no, it's not a fad.

Yeah, I agree. As Thoul said "forums", or at least some way of having people post something on your site (guestbooks, etc.) have been around for a long time and I doubt they are going away. As far as people that it seems just starta forum to have one, I don't really know if you can call that a fad or not, more often than not those people's sites eventually shut down anyway. But as harishankar said, people who start a forum because of passion for a subject and work at it, I don't think those types of people are going to go away.

Blogs = fad

Forums = Not fad

Even as easy as making a forum is now, it is incredibly hard to keep one up. Things that are fads tend to be extremely easy to set up and maintain (since those that are in things for the "cool" value of it tend to not want to put alot of time into any single thing)

People will always want to share their ideas with others, and so long as people are willing to get together to do this then forums will exist. Whether they exist in the current format remains to be seen, but in one way or another communities will be around as long as the internet is ^_<

I completly agree. In fact, I think the whole blogs vs. forums thing is similar to the whole pokemon vs. magic the gathering thing. For a while, pokemon was much much more popular than mtg, but now, i don't think Wizards of the Coast even makes pokemon products, anymore.

I don't know if blogs are so much a fad as the blog has just more quickly become "replaceable" (I use the term loosely) by the next "evolution" of the idea, Podcasts. At least, that's the way I see it in my mind. Right now if you looked at the number of blogs (I'm not talking personal blogs here either, I am referring to "professional" or at least not "this is my life" type blogs, if you understand what I mean) compared to podcasts blogs are more prevalent. I think though, in time, people will start using podcasts as a way to convey a message more and more because, generally speaking, people are lazy, and it takes more time/energy/hassle to type then it does to simply talk, which we all do every day.
