I dont go in for anything that adds content to the forum such as RSS feeds and yes you have your downtimes but by not allowing any sort of feed, then it is the members who add ALL the content and as a result they spend their time reading and replying to what others have written rather than reading the latest news which in most cases they are not even interested in.

20,000+ posts from 393 members is what I would called a damned good forum so I wouldn't be concerned too much about traffic.

To brag, that's after I removed the forum for word games and spam and the huge multitude of posts that went with it and I pruned all the members who never posted or came solely to advertise.

At its prime in terms of activity, my forum reached two to three rows in the list of members currently online on several occasions. Unfortunately, that was short lived, but I was glad such a prime was even reached because it was solely from my word of mouth.

Sure my forum has succeeded over many thousands of others with webmasters who rely solely on word of mouth and no particular excellent features or tremendous amount of awesome content to their advantage, but I still consider my forum very small and very unimpressive compared to the many others that are in the same position but have done much better. I strive to continue to better my forum and have been looking for more ways to make it more attractive in content and aesthetically. I would say the best thing my forum has going for it is me, because an administrator who is not only dedicated but is passionate about his forum and knows that good results take a lot of effort, time, and patience, is a very crucial feature contributing towards a forum's success, and the maintaining of it.

Why not install the Referral mod by Mentalmaze and run a little comp with the winner getting $5 or $10 a month for the most referrals.

Trust me that works and the numbers certainly grow.

Interesting idea. Money is in short supply for me at this time, but I believe I can still incorporate portions of that idea into an effective means of helping the forum in activity.

Referral Mod Plus

As for what I do, I just hold a contest. My latest one is easter themed where I will hide a bunch of easter eggs around the forum. There are cash prizes to those who find them all the quickest and even a reward (a smaller one of course) for anyone who finds them all. I also give rewards to anyone who refers someone who wins a top prize (to promote referrals).

I then promote it on the sites i visit (if they allow such a thing ^_<) and it has gotten me a great response so far and the contest is still 2 weeks away. Id say over the past week it has generated an extra 200k page hits and has increased my registrations by a good amount.

It has even gotten to the point where some of my users who run their own businesses have contacted me about wanting to sponsor it o_O I dont know how to react to that really given my traditional stance about putting ads on my site, but it was quite interesting to be approached like that over easter eggs >_<

More people that were previously registered are now posting and getting to know one another and overall its a nice turnaround from the slow time i was having before ^_^
