An interesting topic. I have never demoted a moderator yet, but that's because I just have a couple of them at the moment on my not-too-busy forum. And they're great members too, so I have no problems with them.

However I want to ask a question of other members here. Have you ever felt the need to demote a moderator in your forum? If so, how easy or difficult is it to demote a member who is currently a moderator back to a normal member?

Share your experiences here! Big Wink

Well, my good friend was a Moderator on my forum. He played and loved Music so I thought he was perfect for that forum. But then Announcements started popping up saying: "The number 1 forum rule is to have fun!". I just didn't think it was appropriate, so I demoted him.

He is what I call "Forum Stupid". He's smart, but when it comes to posting and Moderating he just doesn't get the concept and idea. He SPAM's unintentionally, and I just couldn't have him on my team.

Imagine what it was like demoting your best friend! From our times together he seems to have forgotten it, but I also hear every once and while he likes me when I'm not on the net. Laughing

Now he's running his own Music Forum, and I'm running around frantically trying to make it look professonal. Weird Look

There are times I've demoted them for various reasons. Such as if they ask me to because they have little/no time available or if they are gone for a long time (like months at a time), without any notice whatsoever. Of course if they come back after those months there is a good chance I would reinstate them as moderators. But I've never had to demote a moderator because he/she broke the rules or was harmful to the community in any way.

Having managed as many staff members as I have, it's inevitable, so yeah.

I've had to kick a person or two off of staff. Actually only one comes to mind, so maybe that's all there was. That is pretty rare. In that particular case, there was a lot of negative emotions there and then he resigned and then a little while later he wanted back in and I said no because he was a jerk and I flat out didn't want to speak to him, let alone have him on my team. So, if you can count that as kicking someone off, then yeah.

Generally when people leave staff, it is either because they have gone inactive and I have removed them (and I mean very inactive) or they have resigned, usually on good terms, just too busy to do the job anymore.

I moved a mod back to user status because they were never on the forums. I don't think they even noticed - at least if they did they never mentioned it to me Smile

Oh the nightmares...

Well maybe not that bad. I left one of my old boards in the hands of other admins of a couple of months while doing exams at uni and came back to find something of a civil war on the discussion board. That led to quite a mass purge.

But that was an old board. On my current boards I have demoted a few moderators for breaking the forum rules (four in two years I think), which isn't bad from a staff that is normally around 20 or so. Obviously there is a staff turnover as well from people who do not want to mod anymore being replaced, but I don't think that really counts.

I was a mod on Patricks karate forums and I must confess he was a gentleman till the end Smile I did become inactive due to my own problems and after a while he sent a PM asking if everything was OK. I replied and asked to continue modding. After some days I realised I just can't do it as I want and asked to be removed from the staff. I can log in from time to time (since I already have too much work on my sites) and it's good to know I won't let anyone down.

I am a mod now on phpBBhacks and I hope I'll be able to do my job as we all want since now I am working a lot on my forums and all the phpBB issues are something I have in my mind all day.

I haven't demoted anyone, although I think I might do so Smile Some of my mods are a bit inactive, maybe I'll speak to them about it.

I believe I have demoted one or two mods before in other forums because they were inactive; it had nothing to do with them acting inappropriately.
