I am able to edit PHP/SQL fairely comfortably, but when it comes to actually creating something from scratch....well let's not go there.

I really want to become more comfortable in my coding ability and really learn to do so the right way. So my question(s) to you is:

Did you learn a language (PHP)?

IF so:
How/Where did you learn your coding skill?

Thanks,
-Josh

I don't really know any languages, outside of some HTML and CSS. Smile I have been able to fix my own PHP errors once in a blue moon, though.

I have learnt mainly by reading the php files related to phpbb2

I have no formal quals and have just started wirting a few mods by following what already exists on the page where I want the mod to show.

When I have run into problems I have always been able to get help on www.phpbbhacks.com

Knowing where and what files are involved in each action that takes place is the main thing.

I can install and edit stuff but can't go from scratch either. It is diffcult i know. So i just will edit stuff and fix errors. I've done that to code. But i just don't understand that much of it.

I learnt from installing mods manually and trying to figure out how they worked.

Similar to others I started out just looking at code and trying to figure out how it worked. From there though I did buy a few books on the subject and they were exteremely helpful.

I know not a single php line. All I need to create my unique forum skins or all the sites I have and my client's sites was HTML and CSS. Plus a good eye for the design, since that's what I work a lot on ... I seem to be able to understand how scripts manage templates now, since I worked with many of them, but no php for me. And I am so busy running all these sites I don't have time to learn more on this

The best way for me to learn is to dive right in. I taught myself basic HTML with a few tutorials back in the day, but I eventually bought a book and still keep it around for reference on some of the tags or color codes I don't use often.

I took a Pascal class in college. It wasn't really useful for Pascal, as I never use that any more, but it taught me a lot of good, solid coding techniques that I still use today. I learned PHP by diving in - the same with Perl, though I'm very out of practice on that. There are tons of great online tutorials on just about every aspect, some of those helped me a lot.
