I have not had the need for new moderators for quite a while, but I always tend to keep an eye on good posting members and members who show an interest and committment to my community. I also look for how frequently they post (not that that's an important criterion, but also to show how often they visit), whether they have taken part in the discussions, whether they have contributed any reviews (mine is a book reviews site), how mature they are and so on.
Mine's not such a busy forum anyway... _________________ Literary Forums

Matureness is a big time important characteristic. It's got to be aggravating to tell your mod not to spam... _________________ [Bobsnox Forums] [Shannara Forums] [The Smash Syndicate] [LegendofZeldaForums.com]

Well our staff have been Mod's, Super Mods, Admin, on another board. For me, learning from them is that......
You do not accept anyone that asks. While this person may be "worthy", our experience has been nothing but problems. You look for someone who does not look for status, and just goes about their business. Those who can contribute in caring and an adult manner (I have seen 12 year olds modded), and just show a genuine care about what "They" put out. I have learned that age really does not matter, just depends on how Admin expresses their duties.
We are a very, very, small site right now. We have 37 members, most of which may visit once a week. We only have four people with ADMIN status. Hopefully, if we get more members, we will have to add some "Mod's".
For me, when I was asked to Mod over about 37k members, and 5k visitors a day, it was an honor. I did not care about "Moving up". I just was me, until I learned some behind tha scenes shenanigans. Whatever you do, be honest, it will trickle down.
Sorry if I indirectly ranted a little bit, but, it's tha truth.
People who ask may have an ulterior motive. Those who do not, and just carry on, they are tha ones.

Hehe, I look for status but I don't ask. I don't do it for bossing others, but one site I go to has 2k members, it would be great if I was chosen out of everybody else to Moderate. I find a lot of honor in that site, and to help contribute to it, would make me feel awesome. I try to be a good community member, in hopes of one day "Modding". I have my bad days, everybody does, but I still wonder, when all four Elites are on at one time, what's happening?
(Our Admins are never on at the same time. We've had 3 tops.)
So technically I "look" for status, but I never directly ask for it, (nor indirect for that matter), but I think I would still be a good Mod. |

Depends on what the community is based around.
Usually, I just let them apply, take my top three and let my more active/regular members vote on it. I find it's a nice compromise between me chosing and my members chosing. _________________ - Elbie |

Employing moderators is easy for me because in a closed, private group that invitation-only I know all the members personally, but I haven't made anyone mods so far. I'm the dictator _________________ Toons & Comics Community

After talking with them a lot via PMs and getting to know them well I will decide to ask them via PM if they would like to become a moderator. I also set up a poll or ask my other mods what they think, so we can combine our opinions of the user to make the best possible decision _________________ My Collector Car Forum |

I haven't needed to "recruit". When I started the forum, I invited my closest, most trusted friends from another forum where we all were members, and I was a mod. I got to know them all pretty well there so I already hade a core mod team before I even bought the domain.
Since those day I have added two more mods. Several members had already volunteered for the job, and I'm constantly getting PMs asking to be added to my "short list" for the next opening. But we're overmodded as it is, and it'll be a good long time before I need to add to the modding ranks. _________________ The Conversation Pit

I recently recruited someone who is one of my closest friends. She has impeccable judgment and I have known her for at least 3 years.
I have the luxury of being able to easily say, "Yeah, she's good for the position." |
