A problem many admins face: how to recruit mods? PM them? Have an announcement? Let them propose themselves?

Tell us how's the way in your community?

Well, once I decide that they are worthy, I PM them and include a set of our Staff Guidelines. Smile After they accept (if they accept), I bring them on board.

I work a lot like Patrick does. I've never accepted anyone who asked to be a moderator though. Just can't bring myself to do it.

I let other moderators nominate people, but ultimately I decide. On my latest forum we've introduced a new kind of low level moderator called "mentors" (kind of like sitepoint) and they are voted in by mods initially and then the mentors can nominate and vote for new ones with me having the veto power, along with a set limit on the number that can exist. It's worked really well so far. It's the first time I've tried something like this.

Yeah, it's been a long time (like when I first started out) from when I promoted anyone who asks. My standard response is "I appreciate your willingness to help and will keep it in mind. Unfortunately, at this time, I will have to decline." I had to ban a guy once because he got nasty when I did this. He pressed me and pressed me and eventually I told him that he is not the type of person I'd want on my staff. Anyway, he's a psycho.

I also allow staff members to suggest people to me.

I don't let anyone be a Staff member if they are continually asking. On the other hand, if they mention they'd be available to help in any way, then I keep my eye on them. But usually I recognize who has been embodying what I'd like to see in Staff and end up PMing them some expectations and what all it would entail.

And of course asking current Staff who they think would do a great job always helps.

I pick based upon "good memberness". Especially when people have a specific area of expertise that I need moderatorship in.

A mix of pretty much everybody else. I don't really like having people ask, it makes them seem imature. But when I do think someone is worthy, I just promote them and announce it. I probably should ask, but I don't see why people would decline without a good reason. Laughing

It's hard though when you have good members, who you then promote, and who then are too busy to come as frequently. I should have waited longer on some of them...

I make a post regarding new spaces for moderators and make them fill out a 6 question "resume". I then discuss the "resumes" with my loyal staff. I finally pick the trustworthy ones.

Wink Mod picking is not an easy task...
