I'm one of two WebMasters that are Administrators of the 411Team Board We decided on having a portal but it's somewhat of a nuisense to configure. I gladly turn that over to the other admin, but it bugs both of us when it doesn't work out like we want.

They have both their good and bad points. The choice for having one is really up to the owner of the board. If he wants to he could always poll it in the forums.

I like ours but then I don't at the same time. They can be frustrating

I have a portal page on my forum-only site (click on my signature if you wanna see it). I'm not sure how much functionality it adds to the site, but it sure does give it a sexier look/feel! It was also a nice way to highlight the picture one of my members made for the board (center pic on the portal, click to get to the forums).

fyi the portal I use is ezPortal http://smartor.is-root.com

What a great looking site AnaRQy and the pic you refer to is fabulous.

What we see on your portal is just how easy it is manipulate it to have whatever you like on it.

It is not necessary to leave it as setup by smartor and because it is just a basic HTML page plugged into phpbb you can do what ever you like with it.

Well done. I like the way you have used it.

How important do you think a portal page to a site is. Personally, I don't feel much need of having a portal page to cover a site that is ONLY a forum.

If it's ONLY a forum, then no. I think it pretty much speaks for itself.

I too use Smartor's portal page--it's dirt simple to customize.

I use Smartor's Portal aswell. Tell me AnaRQy, what did you have to change so that you could display a nice logo instead of the "welcome text".

I've looked into this by seraching on Smartor's forum but I just got lost with the info to be honest.

Nice site btw.

I don't know if they are that important.

I used a portal when I started wtricks.com. It was 1 year ago. I installed Nuke and used the forums module called phpbbtonuke or something like this. After 2-3 months and some infamous session issues I changed to phpBB standalone (took 10 hours, but I got the posts and members) ... Few days ago I dissed nuke for ever and made the pages HTML only. I have a directory powered by indexu and the phpBB forums, modded to death. And the rest .. good plain html.. Hope will start doing better in the search engines.

For another project I use Nuke too, but for the links. It's getting a great SE traffic, so I really don't understand anything anymore ...

If your site has articles, news items or lots of links in your header.. sometimes it's nice to have a portal or CMS. I prefer phpNuke because they also have a lot of modifications, but it is very hard to integrate phpBB into Nuke, so I will most likely go with a portal like IM or EZ. Haven't decided.

It depends what you're doing with the forum. For my PBeM forums a portal isn't very useful and actually detracts from the forums, I'm currently putting together a forum for a gaming company who wants to start expanding the features of their website and a portal is high on my list that the'll want.

The frontpage of my ultra-modified forum is my own portal page, i've taken bits from other portal pages but about 80% of it is mine, it doesn't even look like a portal page anymore! I use it mainly for people that want a quick glance at the most important info.
