It would be either html or BBcode, though Im leaning more on html in this instance.

I don't know if they are that important.
I used a portal when I started wtricks.com. It was 1 year ago. I installed Nuke and used the forums module called phpbbtonuke or something like this. After 2-3 months and some infamous session issues I changed to phpBB standalone (took 10 hours, but I got the posts and members) ... Few days ago I dissed nuke for ever and made the pages HTML only. I have a directory powered by indexu and the phpBB forums, modded to death. And the rest .. good plain html.. Hope will start doing better in the search engines.
For another project I use Nuke too, but for the links. It's getting a great SE traffic, so I really don't understand anything anymore ... _________________ Webmaster articles, tutorials and topics |

| If your site has articles, news items or lots of links in your header.. sometimes it's nice to have a portal or CMS. I prefer phpNuke because they also have a lot of modifications, but it is very hard to integrate phpBB into Nuke, so I will most likely go with a portal like IM or EZ. Haven't decided. |

| It depends what you're doing with the forum. For my PBeM forums a portal isn't very useful and actually detracts from the forums, I'm currently putting together a forum for a gaming company who wants to start expanding the features of their website and a portal is high on my list that the'll want. |

The frontpage of my ultra-modified forum is my own portal page, i've taken bits from other portal pages but about 80% of it is mine, it doesn't even look like a portal page anymore! I use it mainly for people that want a quick glance at the most important info.

How important do you think a portal page to a site is. Personally, I don't feel much need of having a portal page to cover a site that is ONLY a forum.
I feel a portal page is needed only when the site has many other sections than just the forum. But the portal page sometimes also seems to "fit' fine for pure forum sites, and many people use it this way too.
I'm deciding whether or not I should have a portal page for my site which happens to be only a discussion forum like CommunityAdmins.
So, how important/essential do you think a portal page is? |
I don't think a portal page is very important, unless you have a lot of features, as the side navigation and the blocks can come in handy then.
I have ezPortal installed, and I regret installing it as I don't really need it. I can't remove it now, as the members are used to it, and like it. _________________ Thanks,

| I use IM Portal. It's a little more complicated than ezP (ok, a lot more complicated), but it's also more powerful. |

| Like HG I use my portal as a front door to my forums and as its the landing platform for it I think it needs to give a good impression so folks come back. Sometimes a forum alone can be confusing and overwhelming to a newbie and someone who isnt confident on the net. |

| Granted my view on Portals is a little biased since I am a Staff member for phpBBireland. I find like quite a few of you have said that a Portal is a front door to the website and use it on most of my forums, however there are easily times when I can see a Portal is more of a nuisance then anything else. For example on blog sites a portal is pointless and on forums that are straight forward and only about one particular thing in general then a portal can distract from that one thing. A portal is good for using when the site has other features, feedback, chat, podcasts, videocasts and anything to that effect. |
