I've found that as my search traffic has increased, my ctr has followed. Next year I intend to make it so that logged in members only have minimal ads (a banner for Amazon at the bottom as the majority of our income comes from Amazon). I will then experiment with the placement of Adsense ads for guests - I think maybe one on top under the first post and one at the bottom might work - to maximize revenue.

One of my sites (directory plus forum) makes me 250 USD/month, another one 70-80. As a total I make now over 700 a month, which is pretty nice since my wage in Romania is 350 USD.

As the network will grow, so will my revenue.

As an answer: yeah you can make money from your forums. But they do require A LOT of work. Most people who make some bucks can tell you they spend all day long writing articles, working on the script, skins or plugins. At first you'll just invest time and money and get nothing in return, but in some time you can reap the fruits of your hard work Wink

I am now trying out a new ad network called LinkReferral.com, an example of their links on your site can be found on the footer on my forum admin link below. I never see them used but am giving them a shot.

I doubt they are better than adsense but we'll see!

I use a combination of Adsense, Paid sponsor banners, paid memberships, and ad posting fees. 1 site makes about $20 a month, another between 0 and $100 (depends on the month) and another anywhere from a couple hundred to over a grand.

Don't expect that to happen in a couple weeks, or even your first year. I have a simple formula. Content created traffic, traffic creates demand, demand creates income opportunities. Of course the simpler content = traffic = content also applies.

Forums are just like any other site. If you are willing to put in the effort and time you can end up making pretty good money. Some topics make more money than others. What topic are you wanting to cover? Some things to think about: Are there affiliates for the niche you want to cover? Are there plenty of people trying to advertise to the niche you are trying to cover? Is there plenty of interest in the topic?

You can do very well with a forum if you put in the work and it can be rewarding in lots of other ways too. There's nothing like building a place for people to meet and share ideas.

Good luck with your forum!

This is exactly the answer you're looking for. A forum gives you a large number of options for making money, ranging from generating mailing lists to direct advertising. Rather than focusing on building a community solely to make money, I recommend spend your time on building a rock solid forum first and foremost. Just like sites, if you build the content, the traffic (and money) will come in time.

Keep working at it and keep expanding. I found that as the traffic increased and I put ads in very annoying and obnoxious places, I can pull in about $1500/mo on Google and another $1500/mo on private ads. I'm experimenting with all sorts of other things, including starting to buy and sell my own products that would tie into the audience. I had a lot of $250/months, but after working at it for five years and focusing on SEO it's all coming around, just keep working at it.
