Forums are just like any other site. If you are willing to put in the effort and time you can end up making pretty good money. Some topics make more money than others. What topic are you wanting to cover? Some things to think about: Are there affiliates for the niche you want to cover? Are there plenty of people trying to advertise to the niche you are trying to cover? Is there plenty of interest in the topic?

You can do very well with a forum if you put in the work and it can be rewarding in lots of other ways too. There's nothing like building a place for people to meet and share ideas.

Good luck with your forum!

I make more out of my content sites rather than forums. But then my forums aren't really "very" succesful.

I read something about forums being low in CTR's. I have yet to test if that is true or not. Smile

I think it can be true. It also depends on the subject matter. People who work online are less likely to click ads, in my experience. So, a martial arts community has a higher CTR than a phpBB support community. Generally, anyway.

Yeah a new problem website owners are facing is AdBlock+ and NoScript which is adblocking software for Firefox. Users using this software {me included} don't see 99.9% of the ads on the internet.

If you want to have more profits your going to have to learn how to defeat software like this by doing things such as:

- running your own internal adnetwork

- dynamically generated urls for banner ads including file path because with the above mentioned software you can use custom filtering including variable so even if the the file name changes they can block it. You could be brutal and include the path of all the images of your site that way variable filtering would destroy our websites look and they would remove the filter.

Example)

BAD

http://mysite.com/ad_images/09798024357023.jpg

easily blocked by setting filter to: http://mysite.com/ad_images/*.jpg
or http://mysite.com/ad_images/*.*

ANTI-BLOCK :: Good for you... Not so much for the user trying to filter ads.

http://mysite.com/images/24359780.jpg :: where "images" is where all of your sites images are stored.

Now if a user does the above {bad} method it will block all the images on your site rendering the site graphic less and forcing them to concede.

Another tecnique for anti-adlocking is:

Have the same ad as a ".jpg" / ".png" / ".gif" / ".swf" This will make filtering a lot more difficult.

I could go on forever about anti-adblocking but I better quit while I'm ahead.

Hope these suggestions help and the world doesn't hate me for sharing this "dirty little secret". Angel

I say to make money with your forum, try Google Adsense and then if it gets very popular, sell adspace!

I've just started up my new community regarding TV-series and movies (norwegian site), and I do have Google Ads. The CPR is pretty low, next to not making any money, but that is just the forum. What will make the most money in the beginning is the Portal where I present memberwritten news and reviews, at least until I'm big enough to sell advertisements.

I also share the income from Adsense with the writers (on the Portal) to make it a little bit more enticing to write. This businessmodel has given me some publicity, so you could say it's already "paying off". As of today the split is 60/40 (40 to me), but when income from regular ads has increased I will probably increase the split to at least 80/20.

Firefox's adblock and noscript plugin can still block all of these ads. Also there is a newer plugin that can block text link ads. Therefore advertisers need to become more creative and avoid common mediums.

I can backup the comment about forum ads not getting clicked very well. I have static pages and forums on my sites, and the static pages account for probably 80% of my clicks. However, the forums bring people to the site, so it all figures in...
