Has anybody ever tried to copy your forum or website? If so, how did you feel about it? How did you handle it? What was you, your Moderators, and your Users point of view about the situation?

This can happen quite a bit. This experience has happened to a community I was a part of. Imitation forums started popping up. Our community Administrators didn't like it, the Moderators didn't like it, and I as a User surely didn't like it. Here's a quote that really helps, this is probably the intent of many imitation "Administrators".

This is from Tom, of Psypoke.

Tom wrote:
I find it likely that some people are setting up forums because they want a 'quick fix' forum that will be swarming with people overnight, you can then take pleasure in banning people and using the powers you get by owning your own board.

This is likely what the imitation Administrators are thinking. They just want the power.

So how about you? Have you had to take care of something similar, or have you witnessed something similar at a community you are a part of?

P.S. The imitation Administrators are now banned from the entire "Psypoke" website. They have banned the IP, E-Mail and Usernames of those users on the forums also. (If I remember right)

I have noticed that the imitation forums are generally started by disgruntled users of other message boards who are usually upset because of some moderation action against them on the other board. This leads them to start up a similar forum to the one they left, but usually they lack the driving force and quite often such boards die off quickly.

Many people start a board merely to be the "boss" rather than to form a community and be part of that community... such boards don't last too long.

Yep, I've seen tons of boards like that. They all died off, while the originals (some started in the mid-90's) are almost always still going strong.

Imitation has always been a part of life, though. There are businesses in the entertainment, toy, food, and other industries that are based entirely on copying another business' successful products/services. 9 times out of 10, they can never live up to the original.

I had this problem 3 times in my webmaster life Wink

3 years ago, after spending time in writing articles for a Romanian Karate site I just received a mail from a kid who was spamming a bit to promote his newly started karate site. Guess what articles I found there Laughing

I emailed him back and let him know the articles were mine and I have a special style in my writing (so that I kinda recognize my stuff). I asked him to delete them or at least link to the site I own. He linked. In few months his site was gone. Mine is still one of the most respected in my country when it comes to Karate Shotokan Very Happy

Ok ... back to this century Laughing

I made my webmaster site in december 2004 and hosted it on a subdomain since I didn't know if I should buy a domain or not (my advice, start with a domain, lost a lot of traffic Sad).

Well, to get back on topic: I started it on Nuke and using iCGstration a theme I do love a lot (light and elegant). Now it's modded, so better. It seems I have started quite a trend. 2 of my members installed Nuke and guess what theme they used Smile

Nothing bad for now, but they have copied my first page (the way i presented the content, an image I had for a promotion), copied the forum structure, threads.

Needless to say ... god mad and PMed them asking them to not create a copy of my site since i do have backups, thank you Laughing

Both stopped and removed the similar content. And yeah, am again happy to say I am doing better Very Happy

I've had users that I ban create similar sites. They don't copy my descriptions, etc. otherwise I'd be in touch with their ISP. Really, a karate forum or a phpBB support site isn't unique in and of itself, anyway. Doing it how we do it is what makes it unique. Smile
