Well, I just opened the open beta for my new community today, and hopefully it'll start growing during the open beta.
So why do I do a open beta? Well, it's not for the betatesting. The open beta is all about getting some actitivty on the forum before I'll launch it to the public. I've been doing this for several of my communities I've launched during the years, and it seems like it's working as intended.
I'll report the future development, and hopefully it'll develop to become the next second best thing. _________________ Excuse my poorly written English. The problem is that my head mainly consists of vacuum. |

Yes, it is. I've always been fond of this way of getting some activity to the forum before I launch it. Most people are talking about the difficulty to get people to join, but it seems to me that people are more willing to join an empty forum during the beta. Maybe this has something to do with the betastatus? I myself will at least be more willing to help some body out with betatesting.
And it's a good excuse for any quirks that would show up. _________________ Excuse my poorly written English. The problem is that my head mainly consists of vacuum. |

great idea.
wish I'd thought of it myself (should have, been in a few for online games, doh!).
been very slow developing my forum, to the point where it's virtually died, but then I wasn't telling people about it.
This idea could be a godsend. thanks. _________________ (work in progress -> www.onlinemanagergames.com)

Something about a "beta" phase gets people excited and interested. These fancy words make people think there's something to look at and worth the time, the thing is you have to make sure it is.
Making a "beta phase" or "soft launch" is certainly an idea. Anybody helping out testing the forum in the early stages could be some of your most contributory or longest lasting members. _________________ Visit phpBBhacks.com for your phpBB templates, graphics, and modifications

Very nice idea eplebiten. I am also thinking to start a new forum, i liked the idea and want to try it but i am not sure that i understand how to use this beta version
The main idea is having a active community before its launch, some active users, more content. But the thing that i didn't understand is how do you launch a beta community? Are you doing this under another domain name? How can you announce your community and get users to your beta version? You posted your first message 8 months ago and now I am curious about your new forums recent activity
If my questions were too simple, sorry about that, i am very new to forum administration subject |

Thanks Patrick, i am also hoping to see a reply from eplebiten.
I have recently finished reading "Developing and Launching Your Comunity" category of the forum. There were great informations for a beginner. I will keep on reading the other categories.
Thanks. |
