From my experience I would say that a community personality is not static. It develops and changes, a kind of evolution.
A determining factor is t he subject of a community. On a board about topics related to politics and or religion you'll almost never find a friendly atmosphere. It will turn into a battle field.

I would agree with SunnyGirl.
With so many people interacting, the place develops a personality of its own. It is how the admins/mods manage that personality also affects the site. |

| With such a large base of users an identity is one that melds together from numerous personalities and unique traits. A good admin can generally "steer" the personality but once you lose control of your vision of the "best" personality it is a very hard fought up hill battle to regain that direction. Communities are the virtual melting pot of the modern day which makes then both fascinating and potentially volatile simultaneously. |
