My forum is very small to employ mods Smile But in anycase I go by this rule. Only when your forum is SO large with SO many members that one admin cannot moderate it all should a mod be employed. Well atleast that's my take on the matter... good luck anyway with finding mods!
I don't agree with that approach. Unless you're willing to lurk at the forum constantly, and I mean constantly, why not delegate and let someone else share the watching of the posts?

We've got mods from Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, Texas, Sao Paolo Brazil, and two from the UK. The UK mods watch the overnight activity into the early morning, I catch the morning and afternoon shifts along with my excellent mod from Texas (who is also on in the evenings off and on), my wife takes the evenings and into the late night. The mods from Ohio, Arizona and Brazil are on at random times throughout the day.

It wasn't planned that way, but that's how it worked out. What we ended up with was practically a round the clock mod presence there Wink

I would agree that if you see a great person, why not just invite them? Can't hurt.

Exactly. It doesn't hurt to be overmodded, as long as that doesn't inimidate the membership. All it means is that you have a trusted member who is empowered to watch out for the forum.

It's not like you're staffing a food prep line at McDonald's Very Happy

Haha, there is a such thing as being overstaffed, but itll only negatively affect you if youre way overstaffed. I am a part of a staff at a community with roughly 375 users and 3000 posts and theres like 7 moderators and 4 admins. There isnt enough there going on for any of us to really do anything or have a sense of purpose. Thus alot of us have just quite bothering with the whole mess. I guess in the end, if youre overstaffed, itll take care of itself =/

You have to go by activity level and not membership. Many members join and never return, after all.

We have a staff of 8 - myself and 7 mods
212 members
86,237 posts since 2/19/05
5,287 topics
about 300 new posts/day average

The mod staff seems a bit overkill, but since everyone is friends there, nobody minds. And I can sleep very well at night knowing my forum is in good hands.

I don't know if I'll ever be in a position that I'll describe as being overstaffed. I'll never have enough good people.

The community i mentioned being overstaffed isnt my own >_< Just one big example of it. At sites like yours patrick, i cant imagine you ever being overstaffed >_<

but its always possible. Especially when admins start going for anyone and everyone that can potentially be a staff member.

Exactly - and when Admins go for their friends, the criteria is more focused on who is the better friend, not who would make the better Mod.

Not always true. In my case my original mods had already proven they have cool heads, good people skills, and are mature enough to do the job.

My additional 2 mods proved they have those same skills, and one of them was limited to one forum initially so he could prove himself.

I've got several very good friends on the forum who I would never make a mod, despite the fact I an extremely fond of them.

Apples and oranges, Nick. If .....you're serious about picking the best people and not having a popularity contest. It's all a matter of priorities. I almost demodded one after he was MIA for awhile, and didn't seem to be serious about watching the topics. I laid it all out for him and gave him an ultimatum. And he is a very close friend.

Cap, I'm honestly not sure what you're saying. I mean, I think I get it, but I'm not sure how it relates to what I said...
I was just saying that I would definitely pick the better people for the job over simply seeing what friends I could appoint.
Sorry, I'm probably just misreading something. Please reiterate for me.
