I'm very certain that there will be a database converter from phpBB2 to phpBB3.

Yeah, there will be. I mean, I haven't sought official confirmation, but it is a given.

I'm very definitly going to upgrade. A few reasons follow:

  1. phpBB 3.0.x eliminates the need for a ton of hacks. The attachment hack, the subforum hack, the birthday hack, to name a few - they're all going to become obsolete since phpBB 3.0.x has those features built in.
  2. To have a truely secure board, you can't just update the core phpBB files. You have to update all the hacks you have installed, too, as updates come out. I mean, there's no point to running phpBB 2.0.18 if you're going to have a version of a hack installed for which sql injection exploits exist - a hack which would have presumably been upgraded once those exploits were made public. Unfortunately, upgrading every single little hack can be quite a hassle. phpBB 3.0.x eliminates this hassle since so many of the hacks that you might want to install are already "installed".

Alot of those mods pre-packaged into phpbb 3 arent difficult to install on a vanillia 2.0.x board though. Attachmod comes with the pre-modified files, and birthday and categories hierarchy can be installed via easymod and integrated pretty easily.

Those mods that are being included in 3.0 are already secure in 2.0.18 as well too, as those who authored those mods for the 2.0.x line are some of the best there are.

Granted, 3.0 will take the hassle out of upgrading those mods, but for alot of communities, those mods will not be enough. In which case, theres not any other mods or styles with which to differentiate your community. Im not saying that i wouldnt upgrade down the road (once 3.0 becomes truly stable, there are plenty of mods to choose from and convertors for my more important mods) but it isnt something i would immediately do or do within the first few months of release.

Oooh, the conversion. Surprised

I've thought about that too, hopefully they release the version before my website becomes very popular, thus I can just start a new one, and shift my few members over. However, if it takes too long and I do get popular (2-4 years Razz) I may thik about using the converter. Hard decision. Crying or Very sad

I'm currious - what (popular) hacks exist for phpBB 2.0.x that aren't going to be included in phpBB 3.0.x, by default? Aside from Xore's Cash Mod, I can't really think of anything...

The convertor would only convert the default tables too and all 2.0.x styles wont work on 3.0.x (just thinking outside of the core+mods) >_<

I can just imagine the phpBB team celebrating the release then the next day over a million posts and topics, about bugs, new templates, mods and everything. I hope this works out for the best, for all our sake. Laughing

I'm not planning to upgrade. phpBB 3 might have a lot of new features, but most of them (like attachments, etc.) are stuff I don't really need or want on my communities.

The theme breakage will be a problem for me, too... my communities use a custom theme that I created, and I'm in no hurry to rewrite it from the ground up.

Bugs in a "Release Candidate" (ie. phpBB 3.0.0 RC-1) are to be expected. Hence the name "Release Candidate".

(I think I've read somewhere, perhaps on area51, that they're going to do an RC version)

I'm dreading the thought of upgrading to 3.0. It's sometimes difficult enough applying the latest patch with all the mods I have installed.

I know that 3.0 will incorporate a lot of the things we currently have to add it, but it's the fact it won't use the same db entries. I would effectively have to get all my members to re-enter their information for all the hacks I use now.

It's ging to be a nightmare. Surprised

I;m torn ... A side of me wants the new phpBB since it will be indeed better. The other me says it's gonna be a rough time. I don't have too much, but still almost 10 thousand posts and a lot of hacks, plus a theme I changed A lot, these are the things that make me wish I stayed with the "old" version.

Well, we'll see Wink
