Hey all,

I lurk around area 51 quite a bit so I stumbled upon some thread. The author thinks that 3.0 will become a target for hackers. What do you think?

phpBB, one of the most popular forum softwares releases a huge new version. Don't you think hackers are going to try to get at it? Confused

All open source software is a target for hackers. But it is also a target for developers and security people. So they balance each other out.

Like most phpbb software, it will be hit with bugs and security vulnerabilities within days of its initial release. Be patient, and I wouldn't transfer everything there until 3.0.2 or something. That's my goal, at least (and it will take me that long to convert a heavily-modded site like mine anyway).

Most malicious hackers (or crackers, if you want to be more accurate) probably won't bother until phpBB 3 gets into widespread use. They'll certainly go after it, as some have been hounding phpBB ever since the 1.x series. But for the most part, they'll wait until it's a big target.

Yeah, they will target it. Like Jeremy said, popularity makes you a target. Smile

Backup files and databases will be key.
