I definitely like 3.0 a lot! But liek everyone says, the admin panel isn't as good...

In the module section (system/administration control panel) and I figured out that you can make different "categories" for things to fall under, making it loko nicer.. To test out my theory I made a bacup and Restore Category,a dded the right modules, enabled them, and upped them so that they appeared before mnaintenance.. I'm sure everyoen knwos this, I just wanetd to gloat over my victory.

But I think the ACP Forums is horrible, 2.0 forum views were much easier and better. But with a little time we might be able to wield this admin panel better than 2.0, and we say, haha, remember when we used that old admin panel??

lol

It just seems they went crazy with configuration options. Some options i could scarcely imagine useful for 99% of the boards out there. There is also the fun way they decided to move the modcp link above the forums, while leaving the acp link at the bottom (maybe its just me, but ive always liked both in around the same spot).

Not that I was a phpbb3 fan before the beta came out, but now that i see this, im only more inclined to stay with phpbb2. All of the features on earth arent useful if you have to spend forever trying to figure out how to use them and trying to find the right section to do what you are wanting to.

Instead of continuing to gripe though, Ill just comment on what i found to be nice in phpbb3 (all others you can consider me not impressed at the nicest)

-search: Im glad they added more options here and improved the search function so well.

-Query identifier: Not useful for most people who dont care, but it is nice to see what queries are being called and perhaps how i could improve the efficiency of anything i would add later.

-Efficiency: The coding is more efficient than the 2.x codebase. Far fewer queries called, quicker loading times, just overall the nicest improvement. Depending upon how they went about that though, it may not perform well on larger boards (but we will have to see).

Yes i tend to think the developers on phpbb3 were more intent on designing it for their own personal use rather than to give credence to the thousand (or is it millions) who use phpbb2 because of it's simplicity.

I have spent two weeks now playing around mainly in the ACP and still haven't worked it all out.

It seems to me that everything is duplicated in there and you can access different things by all sorts of links. Way too many imo.

I did cop a ban from phpbb.com for my continual questioning on how to do something so really they were not at all helpful though one member did register on my test board and helped me through some setups and in doing so was able to set his board up as well.

It was handy that my main site was down due to a server attack for a couple of weeks too as that gave some of the members an opportunity to join me in test driving phpbb3 beta 1

I haven't got a lot of feedback on it from them though but it seems that they are about 50/50 in their opinions but do like some of the functions that come with it such as the colour chart, the easy adding of BB code and others that are actually available as mods for phpbb2.

Personally I think they have gone too far with development in the ACP and not far enough in adding features that are almost immediate add ons in the form of mods that we add to phpbb2 as a rule of thumb, such as phpbbMyadim and Quick Reply.

Also I hope that the final release also includes a new batch of smilies because the old set are looking very very tired on phpbb3

I have "ignored" the first release but last night I installed the beta2. Oh my God, that's ovewhelming. I pride myself to be quite articulate with phpBB, but this is something serious. I kinda got lost in the admin panel Very Happy

If everything goes well and we'll have a converter for me to upgrade my heavily modded phpBBs I won't consider ANYTHING else. This product is just awesome.

Got mine set up also. Looks nice and noticed the report feature. I don't think that was in BETA 1, if it was I didn't see it. Smile
