I just launched a new design for one of my sites today, so I think this is a good time to throw it out for review.

http://www.phpbbsmith.com/mb/

Any and all constructive comments welcome. The forum template is completely new, so I definitely would like some feedback on that. I tried to keep use of graphics pretty low, as I'm one of those people with the slow internet connection that takes half an hour to load image-heavy sites. I've tried to make it look as identical as possible in Opera, Firefox, and IE, but there are one or two display bugs in IE that I can't do anything about. Getting the profile editor to work in all three was a nightmare.

With the possible exception of the links at the top being a bit crammed I like it. Very simple, fast loading, like a lot of your designs, which is always a good thing Smile I haven't tried it in IE so I didn't notice the errors Wink

I like the colors, except for submit buttons and such, they are showing up as sort of a dull pink which I'm not a big fan on.

That's about it though, other than that, I like it.

In all honesty, I liked the other one better. I'm not liking the colors, a bit too bright for my liking. But with my personal opinions aside, it looks very nice. Smile Good job.

I will be truthful in stating that I agree with the notion that the other one was better. The problem with this one is the layout doesn't seem complete. From the start of your forum listings down to the login details, it seems as if you didn't finish the design; the template just doesn't work. Also. . . a dark shade of blue -- or any blue! -- on brown? It's merely a major detraction to the overall aesthetic feel of the template. At least the text is easy to read. . . but even then, the category titles seem to stick out too much because of the font size. Perhaps scaling it down a bit.

It has quite a "retro" feel about it. Not sure why I feel that way. Quite a nice template.

Retro is good, Smile I was sort of going for that really, though I didn't expect anyone to pick up on it. This design uses similar colors to the original site design, but I doubt anyone remembers that other than me.

Yeah, they're fairly close together. I think I'll try to space them out a little tomorrow, but there's not much room to work with, horizontally speaking.

I'm thinking of changing the buttons to a brown-on-offwhite color scheme. I used the pinkish colors for borders in a few places, but they might not work so well for buttons. The brown/white would probably match the few graphical buttons I'm using better.

What do you think of the idea of this layout with the older colors? Now that I have the layout done, it wouldn't be too hard to make a second stylesheet with swapped out colors. I would probably keep the browns as the default colors, though.

I can honestly say I don't understand this comment. Laughing Granted, it looks a little empty without any vertical borders in the tables, but I think that works pretty well.

I didn't use any blues, unless you're talking about the link colors. I left most of those at the browser/system defaults, as that is "better" in terms of usability. I guess they might show up as blue on some systems.

Yep, those are pretty big. I was trying to match the <h1> headings used on other pages, which are also about that size. I'll keep this in mind, though... the <h2> or <h3> size I'm using might work better for the categories, since there are more of them than the normal headings.

Anyway, thanks for the comments everybody. Smile

Seeing as you opted for the simple look with lower graphics content, i think its a good template.

The only change I could suggest is changing the "oranger" colour to E7E7D7 that one, and see how it looks.

Apart from that, all the rendering, alignment, scrolls, code tags everything seems to work fine.

I like the simple look and feel but I miss the Who is Online area. Not that it's a bad thing, I'm just saying I like that feature and miss it.

The Who is Online part is still there, but it's hidden to guests. Smile It's down at the bottom of the index below the "The time now is..." bit.

I think you meant the background in the header area? I'm not sure. Anyway, I tried that color, but I didn't like it very much. It looked okay I guess, but it's just not a shade that I like. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Smile

I've reduced the category title size a little, changed the colors on the submit buttons, and added some space in the menu items. There's a fair bit of extra space in the menus when logged in now, but I'll fill that up with something else later.

What I liked about the old style was that the blue and silver-like color made it look modern. This one doesn't feel as modern and I don't like it. But that's just my preference. Smile
