I think they should try to create some converters so that we can all get to the new script. I think we talk about tens of thousands of boards running on phpBB that mean "customers" for the phpBB project. I don't think all these customers (us in the end) would be too pleased to start from zero. This is why a converter would be useful and everyone would be able to upgrade.
If they play their "cards" well, the phpBB developers will surelly kick some of their competition since the new script is VERY good, especially for a free script.
