Pity - it wouldn't install on my site. It instructed me to change permissions to 777 for several folders and files, but never recognized that they had been changed. I couldn't go any further.

phpBB still has an edge in the "ease of installation" category Very Happy

Curious. This didn't happen to me. Did you try it on a local server or on a remote server with FTP access?

It works both ways: with or without FTP (during the installation). If you have FTP access, you don't need to manually change permissions.

Remote server with FTP. It didn't like my manual settings, and wouldn't login to my FTP account.

phpBB is no match for SMF in terms of sheer power. That's the reason why I chose SMF for my community as I wanted to have complete control over my forum (in more ways than in phpBB) using SMF.

Voted for SMF. But look-wise SMF is a lot cluttered. You have to do a lot more code tweaking to make it look nice and spaced out while phpBB looks very neat and well spaced and most importantly has a clear lead in the familiarity department.

In this instance, the underlying problem lay between the keyboard and the chair Rolling Eyes I gave it the wrong FTP password Sad

I go with phpBB because it has so many MODs. I can find a mod to do virtually anything I need with phpBB, but most other forums I've personally tinkered with seem very limited in that respect.

I thought I posted in this topic. Confused Oh well.

I would naturally pick phpBB. I've already gotten used to it's many features, and ability to bend in terms of templates and whatnot. I'm also getting ready to take my abilities with phpbb, and MySQL, one step further. Very Happy

SMF is nice, but I haven't explored it's administrative capibilites. I'm just waiting for phpBB 3.0 to show up. Razz
