I use SMF on my newest board and to be frank, once you get used to the sheer power and complexity of the admin panel, you'll love this board. It's so customizable it's amazing and it's also quite fast and furious.
It also comes with so many features out of the box that even a heavily modded phpBB board will find it difficult to match this. In fact I think it's second only to vBulletin in features...
SMF has its little quirks, but it's great. I like it a lot. I also like phpBB for its simplicity, but I vote SMF for sheer power for a free forum. _________________ Literary Forums

I don't know what SMF is. phpBB for me so far. It is the fastest, most sophisticated forum code, IMHO.
Others seem more geared towards the kiddies. But for adults, phpBB seems to be the best. _________________ The Conversation Pit

Capmaster, if you haven't already, do check out SMF:
http://www.simplemachines.org
It's the continuation of the now erstwhile YaBBSE series (not YaBB which is Perl. YaBBSE was PHP/MySQL)
It's permissions system is so advanced that it beats phpBB hands down in that area. Somehow I have never been a fan of phpBB in the permissions system. It seemed so restrictive. For example, you could never really define the user level powers in detail.
In SMF, almost every action that can be performed by any user level (From guest to member to moderator to super moderator) can be controlled. (of course, admin has full power).
I found it extremely confusing and complex at first, but once you get used to it, you may enjoy the power and the control it gives you over the board.
Also, it is extremely easy to MOD a SMF forum. It has an automatic package manager that can both install and uninstall MODs with a click of a button. _________________ Literary Forums

Thanks for the tip. Yes the permissions system in phpBB is cryptic at best - probably its weakest feature.
I have a test forum I could try out the conversion tool on. I would have to convert, as scrapping my existing forum and starting over isn't an option.
I'll give it a look _________________ The Conversation Pit
