I think it's a good idea for friends and family if they are computer and forum savy....

I have a friend that set one up for his homeowners association and passed out flyers on mailboxes and then had an authentication process to verify homeowners. It's worked good for him.

Would you ever create a private community - as in invite only - and for what purpose? I'm in the middle of a project and I'm not sure in which direction I'd like to take it...

No. Cliques are a no-no in my book.

I'm computer-dorky! Laughing

You must be working on your site right now...

I think private communities are great ideas for some people. I am currently trying to figure out how to create a free (private) forum host for teachers to use with their students.

Somebody has to teach the little beasties how to behave online. Surprised

I have never used a private community as I find it something that can be an easy epic fail. I use age generated communities that are locked to those under a specific age. For example I have a site that I am working on that is all about Beer and Wine and therefore by the nature of the content the minimum age for registration is 21+. I can see this community going private if it's necessary and from the outside I guess it will look private as I won't have much of a teaser for the public to see as this topic does not allow for that.

I think the trade off is that a private community (ie one that requires you register before you can see the content) will have a smaller registration rate and lower search engine ranking than one that lets guests (and SE bots) read the site. This isn't always a bad thing, depending on what your goal is.

A goal is definitely something to keep in mind. Communities that are more closed off can tend to be a bit more...developed in terms of member to member relationships. Smile

Requiring registration can start to weed out those who are curious, and those who are serious. The "private community" method isn't perfect, but I know a couple that have worked out really well. Smile

Yeah, it all comes down to goals. For example, there are communities that experts in a specific field launch and charge an amount to get access to them and other premium subscribers through that forum. It can work out great for them.

Nick,
I'm thinking that you sound make it public and then for the people you wanted to make it private for make a section for just you guys where no one can see. But then the question is are you trying to make a big community of invite only that would be very hard, don't want to say it is impossible but very hard.
