Hey,

It's time to talk ranks. When you set up a forum do you usually include ranks? If so, about how many? Do you use ranks to give people higher positions than others? Do you base your ranks on post count? If so, what are some of your post count areas? What's your highest post count requirement?

I love ranks. I think they give users something to look forward to on a forum. I base the number of ranks on my forums on the forum content. I'll use my only board left as my example.

My forum is based on a US army video game. So I have ranks ranging from Recruit to Captain. Recruit does not have an image, but the rest do. LIke the army, rank can issue senority. I plan on the same thing on my board. A Private disobeying a First Sergeant is unlikely in the army, so it will be on my site. Very Happy

My highest post count rank is 5,000 posts. It was originally 10,000. But then I saw the Conversation pit, phpbb.com, phpbbhacks.com and realised it would take a small community like mine forever to reach 10,000 posts so I reduced it. Laughing

I also have three special ranks which a user has to do so many milestones to get. Such as "Major". This user (for example) would have to be at the forum for 1 year, and have at least 7,500 posts and has engaged in constructive posting habits. I feel this way spammers can't get the highest rank to boast with. Wink

So how about all of you?

I generally use five ranks based on post counts which work out at 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000

This gives the members a target for which to aim by posting.

When you have a set theme on a forum it is relatively easy to work out the names of the ranks.

When you dont have a set theme then it vecomes difficult and I am facing that problem at the moment on a new forum that is set up for a district within a state so no real theme.

Any suggestions for rank names would be appreciated thanks.

I don't really care all that much for ranks personally. Sometimes I will remove them alltogether, sometimes I will use them (at my martial arts community, we have kind of an elaborate belt rank system). Smile

I let my staff choose their own and change it as often as they like. At Bobsnox, we have sorta randomly inspired ranks where I just went on thesaurus.com and looked up some words for ideas I had in my head. The intervals are similar to HG's.

At Shannara Forums, I have the group rank hack installed so that ranks depend on which group a user joins. If he/she joins no groups, there are standard ranks (New User, Well Known User, Experienced User, etc.) for them to have. The Group Leaders get special ranks, but they must pertain to their group.

All non-special ranks correlate with post count.
