I was just wondering if anyone would partner with a site that contained the same content as their own site.
For example: I wouldn't partner with a site that was devoted to music discussion etc. Wouldn't see the point other than showing members a potentially better/worse site about the same thing.
Anyone out there feel different? _________________ An optimist may see a light where there is none, but why must the pessimist always run to blow it out?

Its a double edged sword actually.
First, I believe that Google and other search engines penalise your site if you just have random links with other sites and that only "related" links are actually valued. I heard Google doesn't rank HIGH pages with links to other random (unrelated in this case) sites. This is the reason why I'm considering removing some of my Partner links from my main page to a seperate page and possibly contact Google or someone as to why my site has 0/10 ranking after 3 months.
Secondly, if you give a link to a related community you can either get new members or lose some.. So its a gamble but usually its not as bad as it seems for either sites (big and small). _________________ Toons & Comics Community

I link to a few rival forums as well. I don't consider them rivals but just link partners.
It's also nice to see new members joining from other related communities. More likely to be interested in your forum content than random members. _________________ Literary Forums

If you link to a site that has similar content and you are losing members because of it, take a long hard look at what you are doing and improve your site.
Linking to similar sites can be advantageous if you stay up to date with all that can be updated on your forum and you give the members the best of the best.
You will end up in the end taking members from the other site and if you run your site the correct way, it will happen. _________________ ~HG~

I have had only one rival site try to put their link on my site, and I removed its reference quickly. My forum indexes better than theirs does, and all they were trying to do was to get more attention for themsevles. Since my forums one competitive interest is php coding, I take a look at exactly who is trying to place their links. While I dont have a problem linking mod authors sites (since we are not in competition) I have a serious problem with other premodded boards trying to do the same thing.
Any more though, my "rivals" have kind of left the arena so to speak so i guess i dont have any rivals anymore >_<

I'm not sure this is true, because then whats the point in getting inbound links if they all have to be related? SEOs say to get as many inbound links as possible and focus on the link text. Nowhere have I read that the sites content is a factor with the exception of a link-farm.
But other than that, I have a lot of different links on my site to content thats completely different from mine.
And also, google does pagerank updates on average every 4 months. So wait about another to see if you see a change in rank. |

Even if it helps PR, I dont think that I would risk activity in my community by linking rival sites. Ive never been huge on page rank anyway and just let my work and efforts speak for themsevles. I dont need google to validate me.

ohh well, that depens on the quality and traffic of the other site. it the both things were fine, i wouldent think twize to do so... its not best friendship you make, but just lifting another up and the other way around. it can only benefid both sites.
but DO hold and eye to the board to se if its still active and dont get hammered by spammers and bully's - then drop the partnership because they are like flees, the jump to the next head, and thats yours! _________________ www.fitnawake.net - fitness, weightloss and health related forum.
