I'm running a portal since a couple of years back and it's working ok. The problem is that there's already a rival portal/forum out there, with the same topic (interest) as we do. The question is, how do we grow when there's already another site with lots of members and that's very well known (started like 10 years ago) ?

We're holding contests and auctions with good prices, and at these times people register, but then we never see them again (most of them that is).

Any suggestions ?

Mass email the members with ongoing promotions.

The more you give them the more they will give you back.

It is up to you as the Administrator to make it better and above all, noire interesting than the oppositions.

Well yes. You have already said that you are holding contests and auctions so keep them updated by email on what is happening.

It is up to you to keep them informed and interested and if you dont let them know what is happening then they wont bother to visit at all.

One thing you dont do though is bag the opposition.

You will get back the amount of work you put in, it won't go unnoticed. Try to find something related to your topic of interest that your competitor does not have, easier said than done I'm aware but if you can find it, it is well worth it.
