|

| I work for an organization where my office computer is on a network. If I want to do something in the admin panel, I don't want to log in while at work because someone in IT might see the password. Anybody else have this problem or a solution? |

Only way to bypass that is to dial out, outside their lan.
And trust me, IT can see everything. I was busted for similiar circumstances. _________________ Admin'ing www.wtata.com with phpBB 2.0.22 |

| My question was on the up and up, we can look at CNN or read a website but no email or playing games. It isn't spelled out but I think admining a message board would be crossing the line. What I'd like to be able to do is admin on break, but the computer in the back office that people use during break is on the network. Hope that is clearer. |

When you say crossing the line, are you speaking of admining while you are supposed to be working whereas admining during a break would be OK, you think?
Unless you have the OK, I don't think you could assume that it'd be OK for you to do anything outside of their network on one of their computers, even during a break. You don't want to do anything that might jeopardize your job or standing.
Assuming it's OK for you to admin during the break, there might not be a (good) way for you to do it without them seeing the password, etc., but I'm not a networking expert. Sorry. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - CommunityAdmins.com Administrator

Assuming it is all OK (as I'm not condoning anything that would go against your company's policy):
How are they going to get your password (obviously don't have it save the password when you log in)? Is there some sort of keylogging program installed?
If that's the case a workaround would be to copy/paste the password from a text file.
For extra security:
Get a flashdrive and load it with the text file.
Plug flashdrive into computer and open up text file.
Copy password, and paste into password area when logging on.
That way the password is never actually typed at all on a company computer.
All that having been said...does your net admin really care enough to track down your password in the first place? _________________ MMO Gaming |

yes

Thank you, that's an interesting idea. It's one of those systems where they can take over your terminal and run updates remotely, but I don't know any more about it than that.

No, I wouldn't think so. But if you have a dozen moderators with admin access, and many of them are on networks, it's more complicated. Then again, since nobody has come up with any horror stories relating to this, maybe it's not a problem.
Thanks again! |
