On your community, do you differentiate between "serious" and "general" discussion? Do you have both or one or even none of the above?

I don't like seeing a General Discussion forum, and then one under it saying Serious Discussion. It makes me feel that the "General" one isn't appropriate enough, and that it takes a "wholenother" (is that even a word...) forum to keep your users under control and mature. General, is a broad word. So in my eyes, serious discussion can go into the general discussion forum. Smile

Both my "general" and "serious" discussion forums are subforums of the chat category. Its not a matter of maturity, its more of dividing up content that some may not want to see.

I like to read the news around the world and post thoughts on it and stimulate debate, some people dont like to see that and instead want to talk about less serious stuff. Mixing the two only causes topics to get lost and some people who may want to talk about one type of thing wont find the right topics.

When people want to get serious, they come to the serious part, then they want to be funny they come to the funny part ^_^

I have a misc. discussion forum and a forum specifically for debating. Though debates may occur in either, the debating forum is obviously apt to getting more debating, as that's where issues of religion, politics, morality, and logic are meant to be addressed in.

I don't have a general/serious discussions. I don't think the two should be mutually exlusive. However, I do have a "Members Lounge" for off-topic chit chat & banter, and "Pub Politics" for discussing topics in the news and debate.
