It won't hurt your forum. I installed one, uninstalled it, and then reinstalled it and it hasn't hurt my posting yet.

It depends on how many users you have and what your forum is about. I would on certain ones but now all. Like on www.aonservers.com we have one and it isnt' a big hit but it is nice to have.

My site used to have a shoutbox, but I removed it a few months back. Most of the time, no one used it. And when someone did use it, it was trolls attacking other members or the site itself.

Bye-bye shoutbox!

I don't often use it, but I don't mind it. Rarely have I had a problem with spamming due to it, and several of the members enjoy it.

I have one on the one community I'm managing as part of a portal system that was installed. I could disable the feature, but most people only use it for little comments that they don't really want to write an entire post for so I'm fine with just keeping it around.

I have them on two of my sites and my members love them. I don't believe it takes away from posting too much.

They work well as a chat system and also for getting someone's attention, like "HEY DOG COW!!! Check out this topic!" Smile

I must say that shoutbox is the biggest attraction if i may call it that on our site, although its almost never more than a minute or more gap between a msg from someone there who use it like a chat. Well yes it adds lots of load to the server, to cure that I have set up a chatroom for those and ask ppl to join that if it turns into a chat.

Have shoutbox mods, admins and a few other old members who get the right to edit the msgs that are rude, have filters for bad words and banning options that shut the window of a user who has behaved badly with 3 various methods.. ip, username, cookie..

And new users have to wait 10 days before they can use the shoutbox, this is for them to get the feel of our lovely online family like site.. where everyone knows one another n respects.. Smile
