I don't have a shoutbox directly on the forum, but I have an IRC channel set up, so people can use that. I'm hoping to get a java-based chatroom up soon.

I installed the chatspot chatroom last week after a bit of frustration regarding the install instructions and packaging by the author.
Version 3 will be released shortly and hopefully he will have sorted out the package before he releases it.
Anyway, version 2.0.0a7 works well and it is a Java chat which can be downloaded from http://chatspot.sourceforge.net/forum/index.php
I think I first read about it in another topic on here but it is well worth installing and then of course hacking to suit your own forum setup. _________________ ~HG~

Don't like the shoutbox. My members will usually post more in our "lounge" thread if they don't have synchronous conversation. Which I appreciate because it lasts longer than the shoutbox, AND a shoutbox doesn't require constant moderation.
So, nothing against them intrinisically, but I don't like them for an asynchronous forum. Let the members post in the threads, blog, or journal...or even use the chat...but no shoutbox. _________________ Cross+Flame

Do you implement a shoutbox in your community? If so, why? and if not, why not? I orginally had one, then removed it, then reinstalled a different version because I felt like it would add to the community. I've now got a shoutbox on the three most popular boards I've been building.
I don't like shoutboxes - but I added one anyway due to member demand.
Personally, I feel it doesn't matter what we, as community leaders, like or dislike. We should always give in to the majority of our member base.
I guess they do stop threads being over-taken by people simply saying "hi I'm here". _________________ Thanks,

My users would kill me if I got rid of the shoutbox.
I use a remote-hosted script that I pay $2 a month for, and it's well worth it, IMO. You can paste it on one page or every page.

Here I disagree. An unused shout box signals an inactive membership which can be a repellent for potential new users especially if you have the shout box on your portal and visible for guests.

That raises a really good point. Speaking from a general standpoint, if I were to use a Shoutbox, I'd definitely make sure people were talking in it. It helps add to the "activity" of the forum overall, even though posting and the shoutbox are different things. _________________ Truestar

Yesterday I talked to a friend of mine who told me that his members tend to prefer the shoutbox over the forums! Whatever you do it might be the wrong thing...

I have a shoutbox on my forum and people there seem to really like it. It is a nice way to drop a quick note to someone in particular or a general note to everyone without having to set up a new post to do so. I think it helps to cut down on unnecessary posts which only leads to clutter in my opinion.
