My users would kill me if I got rid of the shoutbox. Very Happy

I use a remote-hosted script that I pay $2 a month for, and it's well worth it, IMO. You can paste it on one page or every page.

Here I disagree. An unused shout box signals an inactive membership which can be a repellent for potential new users especially if you have the shout box on your portal and visible for guests.

That raises a really good point. Speaking from a general standpoint, if I were to use a Shoutbox, I'd definitely make sure people were talking in it. It helps add to the "activity" of the forum overall, even though posting and the shoutbox are different things.

Yesterday I talked to a friend of mine who told me that his members tend to prefer the shoutbox over the forums! Whatever you do it might be the wrong thing... Laughing

I have a shoutbox on my forum and people there seem to really like it. It is a nice way to drop a quick note to someone in particular or a general note to everyone without having to set up a new post to do so. I think it helps to cut down on unnecessary posts which only leads to clutter in my opinion.

I am for and against a shoutbox although I have one on one of my forums. They are good for a quick shout to anyone but bad in the sense that some days some users post there only. I also have mine hidden to guests. The delay also is a pain in the butt. Thinking of removing mine altogether.

Is your shout box AJAX driven? There is no delay on an AJAX framework, I run that type of a shout box on my forum and it updates in real time with no lag or refresh needed to see new shouts.

Sadly no it isn't and I do not know how to add the line of code to make it self refresh.

Since I have posted my original post I have been pestered to have one on my phpBB3 forum.

I use a chat room rather then a Shoutbox as I have found the shoutbox just turns into a spam box, where as the Chat room is only used if users want to have an actual chat about something useful and meaningful therefore I don't have to worry about what is posted as much as it is deleted on regular basis.
