Do you implement a shoutbox in your community? If so, why? and if not, why not? I orginally had one, then removed it, then reinstalled a different version because I felt like it would add to the community. I've now got a shoutbox on the three most popular boards I've been building.

I have one in one section, we have a live video stream from our office so implemented a shoutbox on that page so people can talk to us while they watch us.

I like the shoutbox but only use it on one forum and thats the gaming forum.

I dont use it on the general chat forums because I dont think it is suitable on those types of forums.

A shoutbox is good for any forum. Users love it. It gives them a sense of being able to talk in real time.

Personally I find a shoutbox very annoying, but if you must install one, try not to make it so it "disrupts" the rest of your site. A large, box-like chat thing in the middle of a forum doesn't look too nice, so if you do decide to use one, try to isolate it to somewhere where it doesn't look "obnoxious". Smile

I have a shoutbox on one template so users can pick the one with the shoutbox if they want but there's really no point because of the time delay - i have a chatroom installed on the main template that can be used instead - i personally think its more effective

There a good idea for communities if you don't have a chat room. Kinda simulates one. However, if you have a chatroom. I wouldn't recommend them.

I got rid of mine, it just wasn't used enough. The last thing you want is a shoutbox where the last message was last week.

Either way, I doubt I will stick one back up in the future. Possibly just a chatroom. Is a way better system to allow members to chat.

That depends on where you put it. The best place for it is on your homepage, in a portal block.

It was placed at the top of the boards, but it looked well. Still didnt work out though.

I love my shoutbox ^_^

I used to have a chatbox first but realized that many of my members were never on all at the same time in order to use it, so the time delay factor of the shoutbox was more effective for my community.

People and pop in and leave a quick message or question without having to go through the few extra page clicks required to make a post ^_^

helps with the small annoying stuff ^_^
