We do get a lot of bots signing up, at this time, but none of them (or virtually none of them) are posting. That's the key, really, for me. Posting is my primary concern. Accounts don't really hurt anything (all unconfirmed accounts are cleared out, anyway) and some of them do actually use valid e-mail addresses and confirm the accounts. As I said, Visual Confirmation on New Posters is golden for me. But, yes, pretty much everything can and will be bypassed eventually.
But, I'm interested to check out the hack you mentioned. I couldn't find it through Google.
Thanks. _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - CommunityAdmins.com Administrator

It won't filter out all of them, but some. The best thing to do is combine that mod with others. One MOD won't do the trick when it comes to bots. The best thing is a unique combination. Try the question mod, where it during registration asks a random question. Then personalize these questions based on the theme of your board.
The Live Validation mod does help though. _________________ Truestar

After reading a thread on phpBB.com about these spam fighting hacks and installing some I was able to stop it on my phpBB forums. It was getting wild. I had some awful posts and images posted there _________________ Webmaster articles, tutorials and topics |

A fellow admin recently turned on user activation. To further help quell the persistent bots, I added the large list provided by a helpful phpBB.com forum member of known specific and wildcard spam email addresses, and I continue to add to it regularly. Spam accounts are still made once in awhile, but none have posted since the actions mentioned were taken. _________________ [ The Infinity Program Forum ]
